Is anyone noticing if the the internet in the dorms is slower this semester?

Last semester I never ran a speed test, but I got dl speeds pretty much as fast as the servers would allow, and whenever I accidently let bittorrent run uninhindered, it would shoot to 700+ KB/s. (I always stopped it quickly though)

Now, I am usually getting dl speeds of between 105 KB/s and 190 KB/s. If I am really lucky, I might gets speeds of about 300.

I was thinking that maybe this was done on purpose, to limit file sharing or whatever. My ul speed, however, is about 350 KB/s. If the school was doing this on purpose, why would they leave the UL speed so high?

I live in wolf village, if it's different there than the dorms.

EDIT: I forgot to add, my rommate is getting the same sppeds, and also the ports in the common areas.

Well, I don't NEED faster speeds, I was just wondering why it is slower. The fact that it is indicates there's a problem somewhere. The fact that the UL speed is faster than DL also indicates something is wrong. If it were on purpose, why would they leave UL at 300+ and DL at 150?

And also, I said usually I get DL speeds between 105 and 190. Sometimes it's as slow as 40.

I was just trying to figure out if this is campus-wide or just me and my roommate.

Are you sure the constraint is caused by something on NCSU's side of the Internet? 9 out of 10, it's usually problems outside of NCSU's networks that are causing the bottlenecks.

i just think it's shitty that they used old 10mbit switches they had laying around to keep from having to buy new (10/100) ones (a repair guy for ComTech told me this)

we didn't make any changes to speed caps. the speed change is likely due to the start of semester rush.

download speed has never been capped.

wrt the 1900s in WV, housing didn't include switches in their budget, and comtech didn't have money to fit the bill. half of resnet is still using 1900s. it's not just WV.

If you're getting slow downloads on P2P and Bittorrent, try changing the listen port. If you're using default ports, it is possible for ISPs to throttle them because they KNOW which ones are default.

According to Azureus developers, you should use a port between 14000 and 19000 for P2P, I think. Check out their website to see for sure.

My download speed went up some when I changed the ports. And I think that the default Limewire ports are blocked off or something, because a girl told me the other day that her LW wasn't working, I changed the port about 15000, and the downloads started running.

Now, um, if you're getting slow DLs on SPEED TESTS...then obviously changing the ports won't make much of a difference on P2P speeds, but overall it is a good practice to use the higher port ranges for P2P apps.
