I just watched the highlights from the NCSU/BC game tonight. ESPN showed mostly BC highlights, although we won by 18. BC played HORRIBLY tonight...but they're still getting the love and exposure on national TV.

What they did was try and make the game seem competitive. They showed highlights to imply we came out hot. Showed highlights to imply BC coming back. And then showed highlights to imply us pulling away.

can we stop this....seriously....we just got blown out by a young tarhole team and beat an overrated BC team and we still think we deserve respect....if we keep winning, we'll get the respect...why dont you people understand that? We're the red headed stepchild to Duke and UNC...deal with it.

If you go to theACC.com, they have the #20UNC win over VaTech as the "Top Story". If you look under Basketball specifically they run GaTech over Centenary as the headline story. #18NCSU over #14BC is simply a blip on the sidebar.

Just thought it was funny. It don't mean shit, get over it.

Not true. Half of ESPN is ran by Syracuse or Ithaca grads...serious. Just because Stu went to UNC doesn't mean that UNC runs that joint. I know that you were being sarcastic, so yeah...it is what it is.

considering Stu does like 90% of sportscenter is why I said that, sarcastically of course.

But one UNC grad in a company is one too fxcking many.

i saw the 11 oclock sportscenter last nite, and i thought the highlites favored us. they started off showing us jump out to a lead, then they showed a few BC highlites when they brought it to within 9 (showed a few 3 point shots)...and then they showed benermans (i thinks who is was) reverse dunk to finish it out.

i swear some people try to make something out of nothing.

I opened my Star-News (Wilmington) and was anxious to see the sports section to see what was written. I found UNC/VT on the front page, along with a Panthers/Bears article that took up almost the whole page. Where did I find a story about my Wolfpack's double digit win against a ranked opponent??? On page 7, the second to last page. The last page is full of advertisements. I was pissed. I have already written to the sports editor this morning and I'm waiting to hear back. I HATE the media.

UNC and their propoganda shall not stand forever! Viva Wolfpack!!!

^^^^ Yeah I just saw it and it was all State...Im pretty sure the version that repeats all morning is the one that is live at 2am, that might be the difference.

Also one reason the highlights had more BC in them originally may be because they are cutting as the game goes, rather than waiting until the game is over....with so many games ending around 11PM you cant wait until they are all over to edit.

^ true, and they probably also had to fill more time with the game then they would have for the 2am airing... so they have to drag things out a bit...

This is most likely because the UNC/VT game was over before the State game started - when a game isn't over until 11pm, it's tough to write about it, have it editted, and make it a headline.

I'm not defending the Wilmington paper - but I don't blame their shafting State's game 100% on bias, they are just a low budget newspaper.

game ended at 11.... They had plenty of time. The other day they went to press with the story of 12 W. Virginia miners found alive and that story didn't break until about 12:30 or so. No excuse....

I am going to assume you're being sarcastic, or know nothing of the newspaper/media business.

Breaking national news (12 miners in WVa) is much bigger news than an ACC basketball game.
The morning paper probably had the 12 miners being alive - because they weren't able to correct the story at around 3:30-4am when it changed.

West coast scores are routinely left out of newspapers on the East Coast because the games end after 11pm.

They have our final score. They have all of the box scores from the night. I'm just upset that NC State doesn't get more coverage in North Carolina. I honestly do not think this is trivial. It affects more than you might think. The more positive exposure NC State gets, the more interest we will get from local recruits and future students. NC State always gets second or third billing. Our win last night was much bigger than UNC's or the other story that took the front page. I don't get the Raleigh News & Observer, and I want to read stories about our basketball game. I don't really care about a Wednesday story on a game that won't be played until SUNDAY. Reading about the Panthers and Bears is not that vitally important that it takes precedence over a game that JUST HAPPENED.

Truth is, The Star-News had the information on the game. They chose not to put it on the front page with UNC's near upset to VPI&SU. They chose to put it on the LAST PAGE. That reaks of disrespect and bias. There's no doubt.

I happen to think the local NFL team in the playoffs is more important than a college basketball game, and I love college basketball.

They had the First Page laid out by 9pm last night - just waiting to see if UNC/VPI won the game so the headline would be correct.
If you think any writers/editors are going to be working until after 1am on a Tuesday night just so they can put the bigger game on the front page - you are living in a dream world.

Had our game been at 7/7:30 you would have a valid argument. You don't and you look like a moron.

The online formats

News & Observer (Raleigh) - front page, lead story
News & Record (Greensboro) - front page, lead story
Charlotte Observer (Charlotte) - sidebar story (same as UNC -- Bobcats game was lead story)
Herald - Sun (Durham/Chapel Hill) - UNC has lead story/picture (State is second story)
Wilmington Star - you did this one already
Fayetteville Observer-Times - sidebar story (same as UNC -- minor league hockey lead story)

seems pretty equal to me. Those are the big papers in teh state..

I've already talked to the editor at the Star-News. I am still dissatisfied with the coverage of the game in my local paper, but at least now I know why it wasn't covered as well. I still don't like the media and their blatant overshadowing of our win last night.

Both were stories from the Associated Press. When AP is on deadline for a short recap, in most cases that includes games where press conferences are held after 11pm, it is expected to have a story on the wire less than 30 minutes after the conclusion of the game. Since the UNC/VT game was earlier, I'm going to guess that your paper was able to use the extended version of the story. If there is a day game, or an early game, where the writer isn't on tight deadline, usually there will be two stories written; one is a short, blunt recap of the facts, the other has a storyline and in more in depth.
It's not media bias, but merely a sad truth of the inductry...later games get the shaft because of deadline schedules on the East Coast. Exceptions are made when two teams are highly ranked...but usually, that's how it works as far as newspapers are concerned.

Thanks Tonia. I just don't like it when the Sports headline isn't the biggest or best story of the day. They could have even put the Sutter HOF story first (a good story in a town where baseball seems to be pretty important), but they chose "Tar Heels Shake Hokies" for top billing. I just didn't like State getting shafted all the way to the last page.

^to answer your question, here's part of the email.

Quote :
") Late games are tougher to put on the front page, especially when we have
a choice of two good ACC games. The Patriots' playoff win on Saturday
night, for example, also ran inside. It was big enough to be on the front,
but because we got it late (anything after 10:45 p.m. is considered late
for our first edition), it ran on an inside page.

3) We have expertise in this business on things most readers would have no
knowledge of. For example, because Boston is a pro market, its AP writers
are more focused on pro sports. Its college coverage is shoddy and slow.
While waiting for that story for an inside page (7C, in this case), a page
that has a later deadline than the front because it had no color elements,
we almost were late. The story came more than an hour after the game ended.
The one from Virginia Tech, where most of the Virginia AP focus is on
college sports, was in 45 minutes after the game, and it was a 7:30 game.
You will notice the N.C. State story had no photos with it. Same with the
AP bureaus. The one photo we got was late and not very good.
"

I wrote him back and thanked him for his response. Neil is a nice guy, and he always had really good articles when he was at the Herald-Sun.

I handled myself professionally in my correspondence with him, and I did not curse or say things that I will regret. I now have a better understanding and I am not as upset as I was initially.

I don't remember the guy's name...but when I worked at State (now a little more than 3 years ago - damn I'm getting old), the ACC beat writer at the Star News was a UNC grad. He was pretty fair in coverage though.
Local games where the smaller city papers are able to supply their own writers get more coverage. No chance the Star News or Rocky Mount Telegram is sending someone to BC to cover the game.

We get no respect because everytime we beat a shit team, our entire fanbase emails ESPN, bitches for love, and then we go and lose the game they pay attention to.
