Philip Rivers is officially off the market, and it was revealed too that the Chargers will at least make an effort to sign Drew Brees to a long-term contract. "There won't be any more talk about both of them being dangled," Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith said. -- San Diego Union-Tribune
....and i meant rivers off the market..

So they're keeping them both? Have they developed an offense that uses 2 QBs? 1/12/2006 1:33:36 PM |

No, but they have developed a quarterback with a now screwed up shoulder. 1/12/2006 1:34:47 PM |

See i would buy Rivers as the insurance policy but why lock Brees up for the long term if you have questions about his return. Rivers is too expensive of a backup, they have Feely on the bench 3rd string us him as insurance 1/12/2006 2:02:41 PM |

Probably just for the time being. Nothing to stop them from making a move in the future when Brees' health and future is more clear. 1/12/2006 3:27:21 PM |

Prolly higher than ARod's per at bat pay. That's like $50,000 per plate appearance. 1/12/2006 8:25:35 PM |

If they were smart they would do what the Bengals did. Even tho your current starter is doing ok, you gotta put the better talent in there so you can reach the next lvl. Many people thought Marvin Lewis was crazy for replacing Kitna for Palmer but he was looking to the future instead of being content with decent seasons. Risky for him considering that 8-8 was awesome in cincy fans eyes. That's what Marty should do. Look to the future so he can take this team to the next lvl. 1/12/2006 10:02:07 PM |

^^ they're scared to bench Brees... San Diego has taken so much heat over the years that they don't want to change thigns when it seems to be going right...
but it's obviously not going that well, they were supposed to be one of the best this year, but didn't even make the playoffs...
but shotty can't handle the heat, so he won't make the hard decision 1/12/2006 10:07:45 PM |

Actually San Diego overachieved this year.
They werent expected to make the playoffs, their over/under was 8.5 wins
THey had a much tougher schedule this year.
Even still they should just get rid of Brees and start Philip. Put that cap room to good use. 1/12/2006 10:11:10 PM |

philip will get to practice with the 1st string during off-season workouts and mini-camps
that should be his first chance to really compete for the starting job 1/12/2006 10:28:38 PM |

^^IF, and IF they were on the same level or even IF Rivers was slightly better in practice/camp, and they start Rivers over Brees...and Rivers fucks up in a game....what then? All blame for the loss goes to the coaching staff for not sticking with experience. It just makes explaining everything much easier. Even if Rivers has a great career, they cant really be blamed for not playing him because Brees had the experience. I dont blame them for starting Brees, although I would love to see Rivers in the game. 1/12/2006 11:14:57 PM |

the Chargers front office does not deserve the luxuries that they have...they are fucking piss poor when it comes to running an organization and apparently have no fucking idea what they are doing
this is fucking excruciating at this point 1/12/2006 11:24:12 PM |

^you're a moron. Don't ever post about the Chargers again.
AJ Smith is one of the top GM's in the league. That roster (including 6 pro-bowlers) was built from scratch on a budget over the last 5 years. 1/12/2006 11:29:45 PM |

I don't know why anyone would think that Rivers is significantly better than a QB who was in the pro-bowl last year and would be in it this year if not for his shoulder.
Marty Schottenheimer is an extremely conservative coach. He is not gonna stick his neck out and start an untested player when he knows what he has in Brees. If Brees is re-signed, the only thing that Rivers can hope for is a slow Brees recovery so that the Chargers have to play him. 1/12/2006 11:42:54 PM |

thank you! so many people around here have no idea what they're talking about when it comes to the chargers organization
the chargers 'front office' that everyone likes to bitch about is not the same as it used to be, smith has only been the GM since '03 and he's been getting things done
in AJ we trust1/13/2006 11:05:54 AM |
