"Study: Most college students lack skills"

Did Napoleon Dynamite write that?

btw - you could just as well site the studies that show something like 50% of Americans believing that humans were put on earth in the past 10,000 years, or that 45% don't think evolution is a well supported theory

This has to be a joke. Are they say that some college students can't read a map at all?

with the amount of pressure there is to go to college, it doesnt surprise me. being "in college" is not a standard for being smart. get rid of all the communications majors and most of the english, psychology, and various other humanties and re-do this study. i guarantee there are few if any molecular biology people having these issues.

[Edited on January 20, 2006 at 8:23 AM. Reason : im not ragging on humanities ppl, but u do have a lot of dumbasses in ur classes]

sounds pretty good to me, after talking to coworkers i'm completely convinced that only about 10% of america as a whole understands credit card offers, so that means college students are ahead of the game...

Quote :
""It is kind of disturbing that a lot of folks are graduating with a degree and they're not going to be able to do those things,""

it's not that they're not able to do these thigns, it's that they just coast through doing them like the rest of america without really thinking about what they're getting into...

Quote :
"Overall, the average literacy of college students is significantly higher than that of adults across the nation. "

in other words, THEY'RE OWN STUDY SAYS THAT THEY SHOULD STFU, but they just won't listen to themselves

oh, and...

Quote :
"Also, compared with all adults with similar levels of education, college students had superior skills in searching and using information from texts and documents."

should colleges be improved? yes, constantly, they should never be stagnant... but high school should be improved first, credit card applications and thigns like that are stuff you should learn in a home economics course in high school, not college

Why the fuck would molecular biology people be better at analyzing new stories?

i was hinting that you cant just cruise through something that has high math/science levels b/c a good portion of the population sucks at them. analytical thinking can help you when it comes to some of these measures. i didnt bother to read the article b/c of time constraints, but ive seen these types of things before.

Philosophy is one of the humanities and you can’t just cruise through the Pythagoreans, Aristotle, Aquinas, and Kant.

here's the study:
http://www.air.org/news/documents/collegeliteracyfactsheet.htm

Quote :
"The average prose, document, and quantitative literacy of students in 2- and 4-year institutions is significantly higher than the average literacy of adults in the nation. "

no shit

Quote :
"The NSACS, sponsored by The Pew Charitable Trusts, collected data from a sample of 1,827 graduating students at 80 randomly selected 2-year and 4-year colleges and universities (68 public and 12 private) from across the United States. The NSACS specifically targeted college and university students nearing the end of their degree program, thus providing a broader and more comprehensive picture of students' fundamental literacy abilities than ever before."

i call bullshit on this study, i find it hard to believe that someone near the end of their degree can't read a map, understand credit card offers, and understand gas usage

most of us are bright enough to not want to answer their questions or be part of their study.

Now, I don't want to go all salisburyboy here, but credit card companies make their contracts and offers intentionally difficult to comprehend.

I watched a documentary on credit cards...

There were a few lawyers saying that the jargon in a credit card offer didn't make any sense to them and it's their fucking job to understand contracts. How is the average American going to fare?
