i have wahl and he has been out of town. the sub doesnt even know about the webassign which is a few chapters ahead of the class.

Compounds in a and b were named incorrectly. On a sheet of paper draw the molecule that fits the given description. From the structure you drew determine the correct IUPAC name. Write the correct IUPAC name in the blank.

heres the question im struggling with

a) 4-methyl-3-propylheptane

b) 2-ethyl-6,6,6-trimethylhexane

ive read about iupac naming and still dont understand it. just the answer would be fine because i rather just wait until this is taught.

u do the numbers such that the combination is the lowest possible so instead of 4-3 it would probably be diff like 2 3 or somethin else and 666 is just plain wrong and not possible

6,6,6 is not just plain wrong or impossible, it means there on a hexane, which the sixth place would be on the end, there are 3 methyl groups off of it.
i just finished helping my roommate with this same webassign, she has wahl also, all you do is draw the compounds as they are written and notice that they did not pick the longest chain. you then rename it correctly.

hahaha

ok w/ the 6-6-6 there is only one way to have a carbon attached to 3 other carbons and the rest of the hexane chain.. and thats extend the chain.

thats to say.. C1-C2-C3-C4-C5-C6. must be formed like this::
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Methyl1
To that 6, attach 3 methyls.. (ignore the ethyl for now) C1-C2-C3-C4-C5-C6-Methyl2
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Methyl3.

Theres a reason it was named incorrectly
