The Carolina Hurricanes have a structure that fits with their talent. NC State runs the "modified princeton" offense, just because we fear change.
The Carolina Hurricanes get better as the game goes on, winning many of their games in the 3rd period. NC State gets outplayed and outcoached in the last 5-10 minutes of every game they play, throwing away chances resulting in losses, or almost letting wins go.
Rod Brind'Amour is money on the power play. Atsur takes idiot three-point shots. The team in general will pass away from an easy layup for a 3-point attempt.
The Hurricanes storm the crease(like bumblebees!). NC State goes whole halves(and sometimes games) where players don't bother to even step into the paint on the offensive end.
I love them both, but one fills me with hope while the other causes me to yell at my TV. 1/21/2006 12:19:12 PM |

You're an idiot. We've been posting Ced up the whole season. He's averaging over 12 points a game. How do you think he gets those??? 3-pointers??? He's hit one 3-pointer the whole year. Again, Shut the Fuck Up. You don't know what you're talking about. 1/21/2006 1:59:03 PM |

No idiot. We won the game so basically it wouldn't really matter how much we went down low...we still won. Now if we start losing games when all we do is shoot threes...then there is a problem.
3 games we lost....
Duke: We went down low almost every possession. We didn't hit many threes, but we also didn't take many threes.
UNC: We went down low when Ced was in the game. He got in foul trouble, therefore our option to go down low was limited.
Iowa: Ced had a pretty good game down low. Led the team with 13 points and 8 FG attempts.
Bottom line is....the argument that we don't do anything in the paint is pretty fucking stupid. We scored like 6 points OUTSIDE OF THE PAINT against Duke. And if we shoot nothing but threes and still win....then it doesn't fucking matter...because we won. 1/21/2006 2:18:56 PM |

Hey we hit the paint against Duke. We gave up on attacking the basket against UNC. We didn't give the paint any thought against Alabama. If you shave off the complete and utter breakdown at the end of the Duke game, that was by far our best showing of the three.
I've never liked the "live and die by the 3-ball" strategy, and think we need more guys than Ced going down low. Gavin and Cam's token layups aside, I mean. It's a strategy that's going to betray us when it counts most.
As for everything I said being complete bullshit: I say "meh."
I think State does need to change up the offensive scheme, because we could get more out of our players with some different looks. I think the 'Canes got the guys the needed for the system they wanted to install. Point goes to the 'Canes.
Watch the last few minutes of any State game from this season and tell me that looks like a team that is going to win some games. I'm not just talking about the games we lost, but how hard it looked like we were trying to give away some of our wins. Then watch the 'Canes come up big late against the very best teams in the NHL and the very worst(in the case of some last period heroics vs. the Islanders and Blues). Point goes to the 'Canes.
You may have me on the Brind'Amour being money on the PP. But he's come up big more than a few times. You won't ever convince me that Atsur plays anything resembling smart basketball(so we'll just have to disagree). Then catch the GT game and watch a string of 3 posessions in a row where we passed away from what could be an easy layup for a 3-point attempt(middle of the second half, thereabouts).
I've seen the Canes score some goals by keeping after the puck. I've seen games(like the Alabama one) where looks at the inside have been few and far between. Not to mention the fact that if Ced gets in a little foul trouble(at least twice this year with help from clean blocks, but that's a whole other story), we almost completely abandon the inside. Again, this is going to bite us in the ass down the line, especially in a tournament setting.
Just the way I see it. If I'm wrong, then that makes me another asshole that posts on message boards. But I'm at least in the same neighborhood as exactly fucking right.
If you're still in school, then I think it's sweet that you don't think Atsur(and to a lesser extent Evtimov) is a complete retard. When I was 18, I thought Kenny Inge was going to become the savior of all basketball. Like that was any kind of smart. 1/21/2006 3:17:44 PM |

I just keep expecting the Hurricanes to trade for or pick-up more and more talent. As many aquisitions as they've made this season, they should be one of the better teams in the league.
And the last time the Hurricanes got to the playoffs didn't they choke against Detroit? I don't enjoy watching hockey but to each his own, but I will pull for the Hurricanes simply because they're the NC team and I really hope they bring a championship to NC. 3/13/2006 5:52:44 PM |

^ The Carolina Hurricanes have never won a Stanley Cup. They have been to the finals once, and that was in 2002.
^^ The Hurricanes didn't choke against Detroit. In fact, it was widely expected that the Hurricanes would be swept in that series. No one ever thought they would make it as far they did. When they beat the Wings IN Detroit in game 1, it stunned most of the hockey world. 3/13/2006 6:04:56 PM |

Lose? Yes. Choke? No.
The Canes at that time were a team of mostly scrappers. They got to the SCF by playing tough team defense and getting goals when it counted, along with getting great goaltending from both of their goalies. They won the first game in Detroit, then lost the next four in a row. However, Game 3 was a triple OT masterpiece at home that the Canes came within a minute and a half of winning in regulation if not for a positively BRILLIANT goal by Brett Hull. It's been said by many people on both sides that the Canes could've easily won that series if they'd won Game 3.
At the same time, it's well worth pointing out that the Wings at that time were basically an all-star team, with more than double the payroll of the Canes. As an example, the fourth line of the Wings was:
Luc Robitaille (667 career goals) Igor Larionov (644 career points, longtime USSR veteran) Tomas Holmstrom (current king of screeners in the NHL)
The Canes' fourth line:
Jeff Daniels (43 points in 12 seasons) Kevyn Adams (master penalty killer, but 118 points in 427 games) Tommy Westlund (23 points in 203 games, now retired from NHL)
If that's not an indication of the difference in talent, I don't know what is. One thing's certain, though; the Canes did not choke.3/13/2006 6:08:57 PM |
