Ok, so I have lived with this girl for 3 years now, and been friends for like forever. Since we moved into the apt we are in now, she doesnt clean downstairs--living room or kitchen. Also she doesn't talk to me anymore. We used to be best friends and then we can go a few days without speaking. That really gets on my nerves but she is the type that if there is something wrong she won't say anything to you, and if there is confrontation then she says her stuff and gets all quiet. Anyways point is I am tired of this and am moving out in April. What is the best way to tell her and not have to suffer for it for the rest of the time with her? 1/26/2006 10:38:29 PM |

Have a pretty good idea of who you plan to live with next year, then discuss future living arrangements with your roommate. The renewal decision for your lease should be coming up soon, and that would be a good opportunity to address your intentions. You don't have to make it a you against her type issue. 1/26/2006 11:02:22 PM |

well yeah i thought about the idea that she may look at this but i doubt it, most of the ppl in my family want me to just move out one day without telling her. The situation is complex, but they all think she is a b*tch.
And I am living by myself, so there won't be a roommate problem again.
Oh my brother-in-law says there is sexual tension between us, so she could want to rape me!

You're going to have to at least tell her 30 days before you leave, that way she has time to set up a new roomate. 1/26/2006 11:21:52 PM |

Well, if you just up front say "Look, we're driving each other crazy. I have got to move out of here before one of us kills the other." I think she'll get the idea.
Best to just be up front about it around the time when you'd normally end up resigning the lease. Who knows, she might be like "GREAT, I'll help you move" 'cause she was thinking the same thing. 1/26/2006 11:35:33 PM |

Pack up all your crap while she's gone, load it in the car, and wait patiently for her to return. As soon as she walks in the door, say "I'm moving out," and walk out the door without any additional explanation. She'll get the idea.

If a lease renewal comes up, tell her you're ready to try living on your own. I think it's pretty obvious that you two have problems going on, and it seems that she doesn't care to talk it out and rekindle the friendship. Unfortunately that happens and it's best to move on. I had to do that with one of my friends as well.
My first off-campus living experience was hell with a psycho roommate. I found a replacement for my room and started packing. I moved one Saturday and that morning when she came out to see me moving my entertainment center she asked what was up, I told her I was moving and had a replacement, and that was that. She was pissed but you reap what you sow. Besides the replacement was a pothead too so it all worked out.
If the lease won't present problems I wouldn't bother telling her until it's time to move out. 1/26/2006 11:59:55 PM |

When my last roomate moved out he never told us. Just dissapeared for like a month and did not pay anything. Then I called and asked him WTF was up and he came back got his shit, paid, and left again. No hard feelings, he did what he had to and did not burn anyone financially, so were still cool.
I dont understand why girls get so emotionally attached to their roomates. You dont have to be best friends with your roomate.

I mean I am friends with my roomates and shit. Just not all attached. We party, raise hell, get totally fucked up on a regular basis, and have a bunch of common friends.
I just think the advantage of being a male is that I dont get offended when they "don't talk to me anymore" if I wanna yap about something I will find some sucker to listen to it, does not have to be anyone I live with. 1/27/2006 12:25:54 AM |

That is your most ideal time to tell your roomate that you do not want to continue living with her. That renewal should be coming up soon ... 90 days notice .... if you are moving out in April, should put you in Feb sometime.1/27/2006 5:43:57 AM |

So the place I am currently staying at should ask if I am going to resign? Cause if that is the case I will just tell her then. 1/27/2006 7:09:59 AM |

If you live in a place that caters specifically to students, they will probably ask, and run renewal specials. If you are in a more mixed complex, it may be up to you to determine when you need to resign or give notice. 1/27/2006 8:02:20 AM |

i roomed with a really good friend and after bout 1 1/2 of living under the same roof she was ready to move out--situation is also complex b/c in the long run i found out her reasons for moving had more to do with my mom than me (don't ask). ANYWAY! she just said "hey LK...so i'm moving out and into a place by myself. i'm letting you know b/c i'm breaking the lease early and i'm going to be moving out in march."
me: "cool deal man...where ya thinking about moving?"
maybe i'm just easy going...but even though we went through the whole i'd get irritated when she wouldn't do this, she'd get irritated when i wouldn't do that, yada yada yada typical roommate drama, i didn't take it personally when she said she was ready for new things.
be honest. if she takes it personally she's a big fucking baby. 1/27/2006 8:45:19 AM |

Tell her right away-- and she probably wants to get rid of you as much as you want to get rid of her so it probably won't be so bad. Just don't be a schmuck and wait until the last minute for her to find a new roommate

oh i was in this situation once. i told her that i needed some space and i was not renewing the lease with her and moving into a one bedroom apt. she didn't really seem to care. just be an adult. don't skirt around it like a 5 year old.
