we have one of the best setups but us students are horrible. there are at least 10-15 student sections better than us but there are less than 5 student section setups better than ours.

On TV look at how many student sections bounce up and down, say the same chants as Duke, and now line up and camp out for seats. Duke was doing that 20 years ago. I don't even like Duke, but give them their due.

i got news, state was doing shit like that for way more than 20 years. Alot of basketball traditions started with Case.

Yeah for real. Most of basketball student traditions started HERE in the 1960s. Problem is the games weren't on TV for all of the nation to see how awesome Reynolds and NC State really was.

Maryland gets ink for thier chants with profanity and t shirts with vulgar things, I don't think it's a tough place to play, Hell we worked them last year and beat them solidly the year before in Comcast.

I want to write in and say UNC has the best student section just to see if SI will jump on the chance to talk about Carolina.

"You know, the way the students are scattered out around the Dean Smith center so that the alumni don't have to mingle with riff-raff.. totally revolutionary."

our student section is pretty bad. sure they might make old women cry and coaches cuss, but if you're sitting feet away from the court you gotta use that advantage to pump up your team, not just tear down the opposition

Most of the one's mentioned are top programs.

If State is perenially a top 10 team and a Final Four contender... I think our students would be the best in the nation. We're still pretty damn loud, but if we were "THE" team... we'd be hard to beat.

Some of you criticizing us have obviously never been to a UNC game in the Dean Dome.... or Virginia, Clemson, etc. We have a great student section. Room for improvement, but still very very good

the state student section setup is horrid too, on Tv it looks soo sad

the dean dome even with their non top 25 team is still louder consistently then the RBC, and mainly b/c of the students.

There are big holes on the sideline section, sure they are isles, but you could drive a F150 through those things, squeeze some more seats there... the end zone sections are empty and basically dead for anyone other then UNC/Duke.

Have you ever been to a game? Seriously, the setups is one of the best in the country for being a new arena. Its as classic as it gets having the students on the floor. Sure, there is a little room between the court and the front row of students, but technically, we're not even supposed to have fans that close to the opposing team. If we would just get loud and stay loud, nobody would be bitching.

however, I do agree that it looks kinda bad on TV, but that doesnt mean the setup is bad.

Uh........we don't have fans close to the opposing team...there are 2 rows plus some bench people in between them....it is no different than any other arena

my problem with the student section is that its only a couple rows deep, so even when its full, theres really not that many students very close to the court, the rest of us get stuck up in the 3rd deck hitting our heads on the rafters. i know if more of the students were closer together it would be far more intimidating.

Ive been to a ton of games at the RBC and at Reynolds as well as other student sections around the league and the other league. The RBC is a horrible setup for students. I'll use Reynolds as a comparison since you maybe able to visiualize the truth that its really a hockey arena that we play hoops in.

the setup at reynolds was so much better.
Closer to the court, louder, we used to pack people in and you'd never see any room in the isles or elsewhere. Across from the benches you were practically standin on the court.
You stood on a metal platform on all sides, which was loud as hell to make noise with, unless you are in the front row of the rbc and you can kick the hockey board, you better have a loud voice.
Reynolds was darker, the upper deck basically covered the student section which would echo out into the court.

Other then Duke I think Maryland has a better setup for students. Where the sidelines are packed but its also at a steep angle which makes you feel like you could lean over and smack JJ reddick in the head and be on top of the opposing team.

RBC is nice for a big arena but if i was designing a student section and a basketball arena, i wouldnt use the RBC as a model.

Right on target

I dont disagree with you that it could be better, but stadiums these days arent designed with the students in mind. You think...of all the schools in America...that NC State would do something to make things better for the students????? Hell no is the answer.

The RBC center can get loud as fuck. It WAS loud tonight for the last 4 minutes, but we gotta get louder the whole game. I lost my voice yelling so long and loud. Its not the setup that kills that arena, its the dumbass students that dont want to yell. If you dont have a loud voice and think that you dont make a difference, you're wrong. Constructive interference...the more people yelling, the louder it will get. Thats all there is too it.

I'm not one of these people that says NC State is better than everyone at everything, but I do think that our stadium is really really good. If we could get it full and bumpin every game, it would be top 5...without a doubt.

I can remember 5 years ago when people complained about the ESA and how it was never filled up. But back then, only the dedicated fans showed up and cheered as loud as possible. One good thing about this year is that we are getting the top section pretty much filled. The online ticket thing is filling up the seats but its saturating the stands with "whatever" fans. This years students are just as bad as last years even though more are showing up.

we know the RBC can get loud

its quite funny (dare i use ironic the wrong way on TWW) that the carolina hurricanes can claim the loudest arena in the NHL for hockey in a college basketball-rich environment, yet an ACC basketball school rarely reaches its potential loudness

of course attendance does have a lot to do with it all

you forget that a majority of that yelling goes to waste because of the ring of sound deadening material above the upper deck seats, instead of it echoing back in off the roof it just gets absorbed. the acoustics are designed for concerts and shit, not sporting events, even if all they did was put panels over the deadening material it would be alot louder with little effort.

i was there when we beat duke a couple years ago when they were #1 and even though everyone was going apeshit you could still hear a pin drop at midcourt.

^^thats bullshit

I know it could be louder if it werent for the sound dampening material, but that doesnt do much. If everyone surrounding the court is yelling, its still loud as fuck, just people in the upper levels arent going to make a difference.

I dont think Hodge would have been slapping the floor and trying to get us up/loud if it was silent at mid-court. I couldnt hear for a day after that game...dont give me that "pindrop at midcourt" shit.

just a thought, but i think our offense takes away from the perpetual noise. we slow it up so much every gets quiet, then maybe hit a three and people get excited, but we dont really have an up tempo style of play that keeps the fans going offense to defense to offense. we never really rattle off 8 points in 35 seconds like some teams. and i'm not complaining about that, just saying its hard to stay loud during a 30 second possesion.

^^yeah but even tonight we got a few fast break points that got the crowd pumped...that helped with the noise a little...it usually just doesnt last.

I mean we are pretty good compared to UNC. UNC waits till they're almost winning or on a huge comeback to get loud. We at least get loud when we see something we like...whether it has an impact on the game or not. We do get REALLY loud at key points in the game if we're playing worth a shit. We need to work on staying loud through the shooting droughts though and we'll be good...but the team does at least have to do its part to some extent. I know I yelled the whole time, everyone else just needs to do the same.

Also, I felt like we did a pretty good job at supporting the team while they were on offense with the chants when they started to slump tonight.

that probably has a lot to do with it. When i was in school, you had to get in line for every game, first come first serve, we stayed overnight for almost every ACC game. The dedicated fans were around the court, thus keeping it louder more often

It wasnt until that one day when the fucking student government thought it would be a good idea to hold everyone back at the parking deck until a certain time and some girl got trampled, there have been some policies that have really bastardized this university's traditions. just let people line up when they want to...

the problem with most "Toughest Places to Play" lists are that there aren't too many places that are tougher than the RBC Center. I'll break it down by conference which places are tougher than the RBC Center.

ACC
-Duke
-Maryland <--- this is somewhat questionable in a way, since some coaches and players have said we're tougher. i still give the nod to UMD though because of the "Wall of Students"

SEC
-Kentucky

Big 12
-Kansas
-Oklahoma State (again more of a toss-up)

Pac 10
-none

Big 10
-Indiana
-Michigan State
-Illinois (kind of a toss-up, but i give the nod to UofI)

Big East
-Syracuse (the people on here amuse me when saying we're too far from the court. look at the end sections of the Carrier Dome. they're like 15+ ft. from the floor)
-UConn (not really to sure if it's the fans or just the mystique of UConn)
-Louisville

C-USA
-none

So that's 11 places that are what I'd say are tougher places to play, and you're saying we can't at least be in the top 25 of those lists?

Look no further than past comments from opposing coaches and players as evidence that we're one of the toughest places to play. I'd trust them more than some game creator or writer.

Thats the point I made earlier. I know we're not the best at everything, and we havent helped the RBC center reach its potential...so we dont deserve to be ranked high. But if you look at the other schools in the country, how many places have an arena that can get as crazy as RBC? Brass Monkey hit it on the head with that list...there arent 15 schools that have as good of an arena as we do...we just gotta get the fans back in there.

I mean that place was ROCKIN last night....problem is it was only rockin at the end.

actually, i was about 6 rows back behind the hoop. if the pin were dropped at midcourt i could have heard it, like i said, i didn't say "you could hear it from midcourt", in which case yes, i would have had to have been standing on the court and my number would 00 (or maybe 24, i'm not sure), but i'm too short and too slow to compete at the level we are discussing.

my point was that despite the fact that i knew everyone was screaming as loud as they could, it wasn't very loud to listen to.
