i have a little marlin 22 rifle, and a fresh round will no longer load into the barrel. it *looks* like the rim of a round casing has been stripped and the barrel of the round casing is stuck just a bit inside the barrel.
anything i can do? should i take it to a gunsmith and if so which one? how much would it cost to be fixed? i'm curious if its worth getting fixed, since i should be able to get another one rather cheaply. 2/1/2006 10:06:06 PM |

Wait... So the brass is still in the chamber, but the rim has been torn off? Is it just the outside edge of the rim, or is the whole base of the cartridge gone, too? 2/1/2006 10:18:42 PM |

^That might not be too dangerous, because a .22's primer is on the rim. If the rim is torn off, there isn't any primer. Although there is still a possibility of of shooting yourself, so really don't do that.
If you can't see a cartridge in the chamber at all, shine a flashlight down the barrel from the muzzle end and see if it lights up the chamber. 2/1/2006 10:26:25 PM |

Take it to a gunsmith even if it will cost you more than the rifle is worth. I recommend that you do this to be sure that there is no danger or liability resulting from accidental discharge. 2/1/2006 10:41:22 PM |

thats what you get for buying a cheap-ass marlin. buy a ruger 10/22(still a pretty low price) and you will never have any problems 2/1/2006 10:51:05 PM |

if the casing broke, aka part of the outer case is left loged, you need to use a broken case extractor or make your own. A 3/16 or 7/32 drillbit will work, jsut turn it in enough to gram the case, then pull the case clear. A small screwdriver will also work. If the rim is gone, a ramrod/cleaing rod may or may nto help. A gunsmith is not needed, though for like $5/a beer i would fix it for you. 2/1/2006 11:00:57 PM |

Don't use a jointed cleaning rod, either. If you don't have a solid cleaning rod, use a wooden dow.
I wouldn't use a screwdriver, that could damn something. 2/1/2006 11:08:31 PM |

yeah so all that is left of the casing is the barrel, i can shine a light through the barrel no problem. i'll try the drill bit, but i have the feeling its jammed in there pretty damn badly and that wont work. the "barrel" of the casing is totally lodged in the barrel, totally in there, not just a small section of it.....the barrell of the casing probably about .5" up the barrel 2/1/2006 11:26:28 PM |

got it fixed yet?
I have had to fix a similar brekage before, jsut not in a .22. My sks has stuck cases every once in a while, and if i am shooting brass case stuff, it can pull the case apart. Never has trouble with russian steelcase stuff though. 2/3/2006 7:05:26 PM |

Like they said above, slide a cleaning rod down the barrel and you WILL be able to push the brass out. There is no way that it is stuck in the chamber that bad. 2/3/2006 11:36:55 PM |

Removed the stock, even though i didnt need too. Soaked the inside of the barrell in penatrating oil, and Shaped a piece of wire to fit exactly 22 calliber, a couple of jabs down the barrel and out came the caseing, Cleaned the gun up, saved synapse $80, AND THAT IS ALL. 2/17/2006 11:44:08 AM |
