the trick to drinking the nasty stuff is with a straw and suck it down REAL fast...just get it over with. some people just sip on it and that's 2/3/2006 4:06:51 PM |

you dont have to drink anything fr the mri, just the ct scan. i had my knee done and it took about an hour, if you are lucky they have an open design, so you wont feel cramped. i fell asleep and it was over super quick. no worries it doesnt hurt. 2/3/2006 4:07:58 PM |

yeah I didn't have to drink anything
they will ask you like ten times if you are claustrophobic. Say yes and you'll get some drugs. All you really do is lay in the tube really still while the machine clicks. It's mostly just boring, unless you're claustrophobic in which case I guess it's scary. 2/3/2006 4:16:20 PM |

I had an MRI today actually. It was on my calf and knee from an auto accident this summer.
It wasnt that bad because I didnt actually go all the way in the thing, got to have my head and toso out so that was good. Otherwise, I would have freaked...claustrophibic as shit.
They even let me pick a CD to listen to. Pretty sweet. Didnt have to drink anything though...
They gave me a squeeze button if I felt like I was going to freak out I could press it and I could get out. Not so bad though. Get one at Duke Medical Services off Wake Forest Rd.. PM for phone, etc

i just had one this morning. they're nothing. kind of a pain in the ass to take my eyebrow ring out, and then put it back in though.
i've also never had to drink anything either, and i've had at least six MRIs... it's a little freaky the first time (being in such a small little tube) but i was looking around a bit today and you could definitely get back out if you needed to, which is reassuring. 2/3/2006 4:24:14 PM |

When I had an MRI on my wrist I was in one of the open ones. Those things are nice, not tight at all.

Yeah, I have a rare condition in my left leg and have had a few MRIs on it. Get one of those open MRIs if you can, as the ones where they stick you in the tube are confining, and can be loud, even if you're listening to music. The open ones may let people sit in the room and talk to you 2/3/2006 4:57:59 PM |

I had one in 1998, it was the tube one, not the open design. Shoulder injury. It was pretty loud, but I sleep like a rock and it was also at 9 AM so I had no problem sleeping through it.
I've had a CAT scan too, those things are no big deal either. Never had to drink any of the solution stuff for either. 2/3/2006 7:21:51 PM |

^ That's where I had my MRI. It was so cold. It was a colder day and the MRI machine is out in a mobile trailer. No fun at all. My knee was hurting so badly it was a horrible experience.
Good luck to you. I hope it goes well for you! 2/3/2006 9:25:48 PM |

I have one over at Duke every other year for a condition I have. You get used to it. I go all the way in every time for about 45mins or so (cept one time the machine didn't scan right and I ended up in there for almost 2 hours). Mine takes a while due to the types of scans being done. You shouldn't have to drink or get injected with anything. It's all about magnetics.
One tip I have for you is to wear as little metal as possible that day because you can't have any metal in the vicinity of that thing. Make sure you are aware of any metal in your body as well due to surgery/etc. If questionable ASK, better than risking anything.
And as said above, depending on the machine it will have some noise to it. Ask if they can play a CD for you; else they should give you some earplugs. If they can't play a CD just daydream or count the beats the machine is making.
Also whatever you do, don't move when you're being scanned at all. You don't want to be there longer than you have to.

ive been getting one about every year since i lost my arm 6 yrs ago, they want to check to see if there's any irregular bone growth or something that could cause complications in the future (im not sure why they can't xray, but oh well)
im not claustrophobic or anything, so it doesn't bother me to be in that small tube, nor did I have to drink the liquid. One thing was was kinda cool were some prism-glasses that they put on you so that when you look straight up, you really see outside the tube (to help with the claustrophobia) 2/4/2006 1:12:46 AM |

Barium. Nastiest stuff ever invented. And I think some doctor's make you drink it just to spite you, because I'm pretty sure there's a pill release form too.2/4/2006 2:22:13 PM |

I had one after I had been given a morphine drip on an empty stomach and I vomited all of the red drink up right before. But I was so out of it from the morphine that I don't really remember it besides being very still.
(Interesting story)-My dad's a diabetic and he has to give himself insulin shots in his leg or stomach. He said that when it passed over his stomach it felt like his skin was raising up or being pulled on-it didn't hurt but was uncomfortable. The doctor told him that it was because when you give a shot, the sharpest part of the needle breaks off under the skin and he had like pockets of the metal on each side of his belly button-but as the machine passed over it, it was magnetized and that's why he felt it. I thought it was pretty cool. 2/4/2006 3:13:19 PM |
