CHAPEL HILL -- Three Duke football players and one UNC player, including the leading tacklers for each team, were charged with misdemeanors early Sunday morning after a fight between members of the two teams broke out at a downtown Chapel Hill nightclub.
"We got a call for a fight in progress inside the club," said Maj. Brian Curran of the Chapel Hill Police Department. "The folks involved in the fight were largely football players. The officers that arrived called for more help."
The fight came just two days before the two archrivals clash at the Smith Center in their first men's basketball meeting of the year.
Police charged Larry Daniel Edwards, 20, who is listed as a junior linebacker for Tar Heels, with damage to real property. An officer saw Edwards, who tied for the UNC team lead with 91 tackles during the 2005 season, break out a glass window of an exit door at the club, Curran said.
Police also charged Michael Shawn Brown, 19, with failure to disperse on command. Brown, a linebacker who led Duke with 92 tackles, was recently named the ACC Defensive Freshman of the Year by the Sporting News and was named to the freshman All-America team by the Football Writers Association of America.
The fight took place at the new Chi Hi Club at 136 E. Rosemary St., Curran said. When the officers arrived a couple of hundred people were outside, and they were egging the fighters on, Curran said.
The officers struggled to get control of the situation, and when they ordered people to leave the area, some refused, he said.
Police also charged Andreas Timon Platt, 20, who is listed on the Duke football roster as a freshman safety, and Segun Adetokunbo Akande, 20, who is listed as a junior fullback on the team, with failure to disperse on command.
The charge of failure to disperse is associated with riots or disorderly conduct involving three or more people.
"From what the report said, it started off as a private party," Curran said. "I believe some Duke students rented the place, and then it just got out of hand."
Duke students often come to Chapel Hill to go to clubs and party, he explained.
"We certainly welcome them when they come," Curran said. "We just ask that they behave appropriately when they're here."

sounded to me like the Duke players were having a private party which the Carolina player crashed.... Also sounded like Larry Edwards was making an ass of himself since he was the only one charged with anything other than "failure to disperse on command".
Typical Carolina assholes.... 2/7/2006 10:43:40 AM |

It will be interesting to see if Bunting will actually hand down any punishment on Edwards or if he'll just look the other way. I bet he pulls a Bobby Bowden and Edwards doesn't receive any type of appropriate punishment like a playing suspension. 2/7/2006 11:32:10 AM |

what I don't understand is why these athletes keep getting into trouble. If i'm getting paid to play sport in college, and I have potential to play in the NFL, I would stay as far from trouble as possible. 2/7/2006 11:37:24 AM |

Ha. Notice it was the Durham paper and not NandO. Also, if you want a list of times NandO has ignored UNC players getting in much deeper trouble (As in nearly killing a teammate by bludgeoning him with a freeweight and getting arrested), it can be done.
Meanwhile, TA McLendon getting an underage drinking ticket is pasted all over the front page.2/7/2006 11:41:29 AM |

^^ I just went to the N&O site and saw nothing on this incident. That is such bullshit. If it had been State-Wake or State-ECU, each fucking columnists would have written a story about how Chuck can't control his players on field and off.

yeah I was going to look in the N&O but didn't even bother, because I knew it would be a waste of time. And you are right about any trouble our athletes get into because time and time again any little thing that happens with someone even affiliated with State will be front page news. 2/7/2006 12:32:58 PM |

^ I sent an email to the N&O asking why they are ignoring this story. I doubt I'll get a response. 2/7/2006 12:44:41 PM |

This is pretty minor and isn't a flaw to the University. Now, the more serious stuff.... it'll never make the news. 2/7/2006 1:44:12 PM |

^^ Bunting had to preserve "the carolina way," those clowns Bowman, PUFF Thomas, and Fred SPARKman got arrested, which is a black eye to the university. Let me know when he kicks a guy off for something internal that the public doesn't know about, as what CTC did with R. Washington, our BEST receiver. 2/7/2006 1:59:39 PM |
