"I want to tell you something," he said. "... You cannot allow people to go around pointing at officials and yelling at them without technicals being called. That is just not allowed. So let's get some things straight around here and quit the double standard that exists in this league, all right?" " |

Dean and K are the same coach (something all Duke fans will dispute but they are the same TYPE of coach). I don't see why either one should have had to change though.. i mean isn't the goal to win? It's not like he is cheating..

awwww. Doyel is crying like a little baby. He needs to just get over himself and find a better outlet for his frustration at UF's excellent yet "disappointing" season. Maybe he'll find it in a long walk off a short pier, or in an attempt to break the world record for hitting one's self in the head with a hammer.
Maybe what K found is that if one coach can do it, he should try. That quote is 22 years old, and people change tactics over the years. He found it used more and more often, especially by Smith, and decided it was time for him to try. Hey, if it works, why not.
Doyel. Shut up. For the good of the game and all breathing individuals on this planet. Just shut up.

but i agree with the 84 version of coach K, coaches should get T'ed up a lot more frequently, and be consistent with it. I'm pretty sure herb has had more technical fouls than K and when looking at personalities, how can that be? 2/8/2006 1:45:18 PM |

coach k was in his 4th season with duke with that quote that doyel sites...he may have despised it back then, but he did what he should have done...learned from the best. he saw that dean smith could do it and it would work so now he does the same. as said...until it's in the books...take the advantage.
even herb's gotten better working the refs over the years...it's all with coaching experience.

Smith is NOT the best. Wooden is hands down the best coach in college history.
I'm sure you'll say that Smith has more wins. Big freakin' deal. He has the most wins in keep away, not basketball. Wooden won with great coaching, and won more championships than any other coach ever. Smith's two national championships came on mistakes by the other team (Webber's phantom timeout and Worthy's convincing portrayal of a member of the other team).
The only, ONLY credit Smith has to his name is the little clock above the basket known as the shot clock (to keep him from playing keep away and promote actual basketball).
I hate everything UNC.... I grew up having to constantly hear about them, and now my brother goes to school there. Being an NC State grad also makes me hate them worse. I'm not bitter, but where the hell do people get that Smith is the best. He won more basketball games when both teams were in the single digits than any other coach EVER. That's keepaway, not basketball.
I'm bitter, I'm hateful, and I will not stop until UNC is a withering maze of ruins outside Durham. I hope the school is disbanded, and all symbols pertaining to it are stricken from public record.

There's nothing wrong with finding a way to use the rules to your advantage. Smith's abuse of the Four Corners isn't much different from Valvano's abuse of using fouling to stop the clock. 2/8/2006 2:08:51 PM |

^^but with fouling to stop the clock you still must hit your shots.... You can't just throw the ball (which requires no skill) back and forth for 40 mins after you get one more point than the opponent.... 2-0 is not a basketball score...it's a keep away score.
^NCAA investigates these things...sometimes. NC State has been the scapegoat of the NCAA before.... UNC could walk out in front of an NCAA official, give a player a car and a house in front of said official, and ask the official if it was ok. I'm sure that said official would look to the side and say, "Is what ok? I didn't see anything." UNC does just as much dirty stuff as any other program in America, but is always portrayed as a "golden child" and "untouchable." I've seen far too many things go underreported when it happens to a UNC player, and then be front page news when it is a Duke or NC State player.
UNC is intolerable. I would have a hard time choosing who to pull for if UNC went against the Iranian government team.
I'm just venting.

Sure Koren, you can get the pimped out Escalade today and make no payments for a year - all you have to do is sign this lease agreement (18% interest compoundly monthly and a $125 penalty on any late payments - BLAH BLAH BLAH)2/8/2006 2:17:14 PM |

^It was advertised a few years ago that if you were an athlete for UNC, you could get a loan at Michael Jordan's dealerships for $1/month until after you graduated. The question I have is when the dealership is owned by a former player.... I'm sure that UNC has figured out a way to dance around regulations, but how is it not a gift? It's almost a 5-finger, wink-wink, you can pay me back later discount.... 2/8/2006 2:20:47 PM |

Speaking of the whole Duhon's mom getting a job situation. Isn't what she was doing the same thing as networking. I mean yea, because her son was good at ball, but it didn't compromise anything IMO. If she was "qualified" (big gray area, I know) for the job, I don't see it as a problem. And if you're referring to the cars UNC players drive, I'm not sure about he Lexus's and Benz's, but Jamison drove a pathfinder, which I'm sure was in collaboration for the dollar a month thing until he went pro, sounds legal. I mean, it's either against the rules, or not, opinions about weather its right or wrong morally don't matter, weather it breaks a rule or not is the only thing that matters. I mean look at Lebron in high school with the hummer. What bank wouldnt give him a loan, sounds like goodbusiness to me on the bank's part, I mean can amateurs not get loans liek the rest of us? 2/8/2006 5:36:40 PM |

Focus people.
Doyel is a horrible, horrible sports writer and this just further proves it, and asking for K to step down is just laughable.
Check out this, admittedly from DBR, but still:
"Well, what Doyel doesn't tell you is that he has an issue with Krzyzewski which predates this nonsense, and that was his book about Coach K. Krzyzewski refused to be part of an unauthorized biography and asked others who were or who had been in the Duke program to also not participate."
"Needless to say, this significantly weakened his book and did not go over well with Doyel. But he won't tell you that when he criticizes Krzyzewski." 2/9/2006 8:53:30 AM |

oh and where did he ask K to step down ? I'm not saying he didnt I just missed it
I just saw :

jwh, are you blind?
To say that only UNC players get the nice cars would be stupid. Shall you show up for a NCSU football practice and check out some of the cars in the parking lot? How about NCSU basketball, please do sometime, maybe then you'll realize that as much as you hate UNC, you can't blame every conspiracy theory, every nice vehicle someone drives as man, they are UNC, they get whatever they want. This happens EVERYWHERE...
as far as the four corners offense, it is no different than Valvano and his fouling tactics. Take a step back and stop being so god damn bitter...it's why people call us whiners and cry babies 2/9/2006 11:47:40 AM |
JWHWolf All American 3320 Posts user info edit post |
erica85, I'm not blind. I am just trying to point out some faults in what most ignorant people call a "perfect program". They seem perfect, because they have plenty of people in high places to cover shit up when someone affiliated with the program violates a law or regulation. I remember Phillip Rivers driving the same old Taurus to practices and class, and Anthony Grundy driving the same Oldsmobile every time I saw him on campus. I know many other players who drive the same cars they had in h.s.... On the other hand, Rashaad McCants who was from a trailer park in Asheville rolled around in new wheels with large rims, his ipod headphones on, brand new clothes, and parked in handicapped spots. Someone paid for all his "bling" and I don't think it was his parents....
Again, the four corners offense is NOT an offense. It requires no skill. It requires a keep away team.
"Valvano's fouling tactics" as you put it, still require you to have the skill to hit YOUR shots. I'm sure Valvano wasn't the only one to use it when he did, so you calling it exclusively his is like me calling what you do to be the "erica85's stalk and troll" strategy. Plus, it seems to me that if it wasn't legal to do, the NCAA would put a stop to it. JUST LIKE THEY PUT A STOP TO SMITH'S KEEP AWAY NON-TALENT.
My point was originally that Smith is nowhere near the best coach in the NCAA. I put forth that John Wooden was the best coach. Someone said that he paid his players (to which I have no response because I have seen no evidence). I responded that UNC probably did as well, and sought to provide what I recall as favoritism by a UNC-grad OWNED DEALERSHIP to UNC Players. I could also put forth that UNC got FREE groceries for a year of football meals from a local Winn-Dixie. That was broadcast by one or two stations and then quickly swept under the rug. Numerous basketball and football players for UNC have had domestic charges, traffic violations, and drug convictions taken out of the headlines for years. You call it whatever you want erica85, but when it comes down to it...NC State runs cleaner, better programs than UNC but somehow UNC gets by with all that they do and NC State gets scrutinized. 2/9/2006 1:27:41 PM |
