RawWulf did you come up with that list yourself, or was it collaborative?

Don't get me wrong Silent Alarm fucking blew me away, and I really dug Illinois and Guero

but it boggles my mind that The Woods got overlooked like that

this list sucks a fat nut. Full of emo, trendy, and amelodic crap.

The only two records I even like out of the entire list are M83 and New Pornographers.

The list came from boxes of CDs sitting in my office, and I asked people's opinions and considered those when I came up with the final list. I could have easily substituted Damian Marley with Sleater-Kinney, Stars, LCD Soundsystem or Animal Collective. It was a tough call, but I stand by my choices.

I can say this year is significantly different from last year's list. Last year I damn near predicted the Grammys, but it just so happened the best albums, in my opinion, were also popular albums. This list mirrors more the 2003 albums -- on which The Mars Volta came in second.

Thanks for the props ZiP and others who have contacted me over IM, phone, e-mail and PM.

I fell in love with Frances the Mute the second I heard it. I was awestruck by its flow and the level of (successful) experimentation they took it. I mean, there were some strange toying around that went down this year (ie. The Fiery Furnaces), but this took the cake. It was a tough battle between Illinois and that though; and it could still be contended they are interchangeable. It's pretty obvious the top five albums are each pretty unique and all stand very strong.

I'd probably like Frances The Mute more if the average track time wasn't like 15 minutes.

Weeding through all the pretentious artsy shit gets old after a while.

The list doesn't mean every album after 30 sucks. I have dozens of albums that are stellar, they just didn't make the top 30.

I don't think any single person would agree with anyone's list. Somebody will always want to move something up, down, in or out. But I can guarantee there are hundreds of students of this campus who haven't heard The New Pornographers' Twin Cinema; and if my list encouraged them to buy it, burn it, download it or borrow from a friend, then I'm more than thrilled.

How can you ever have a "top list" w/ music?

It's music. Which is pretty much 100% opinion. It's not possible for someone to compile a top list of music because it's 100% dependent on THEIR OWN opinions. Why even try.

I don't get the hype over the Dangerdoom album. I thought it was boring. The Craft isn't doing it for me, either, though. I heard "Powers" in the gym yesterday and it reminded me why I hadn't gotten the CD out in so long.

It's not that I think the length is affecting the quality. What I mean is that on De-Loused I really liked "Drunkship of Lanters". I think it's a great song and when I want to listen to it, I can jump right to track 5. The entire album flows, but it's all split into 5-7 minute segments.

If I just want to listen to a certain part if Frances, I have to wade through either a 12 or 32 minute track and that's really just dumb considering they already proved they could make a flowing, track split CD before.

In that case, I retract my statement.

Rhapsody doesn't have them split at all, so Cassandra Gemini is just one 32 minute, unseparated track.

word.

...from what i have been told (i have no way to back it up though) is that they had to split up the tracks because the record company told them they would only pay them for an EP (much less money) if they only have 5 tracks on the album (even if it was 75 minutes). they had to split up the tracks to get the full amount "album" amount of money.
