Benefiting the Sam Spady Foundation February 18th 1-4 PM Garner Ice House
http://www.samspadyfoundation.org http://www.icehouserinks.com/garner/special_spadyskate.html
On February 18, 2006, Rho Chapter of Sigma Pi Fraternity at North Carolina State University will be holding its first ever "Skate for Sam," a fundraiser benefiting the Sam Spady Foundation for Alcohol Posioning Awareness at the Garner Ice House.
Taken from the Foundation's Website:
Quote : | "The SAM Spady Foundation honors the memory of Samantha Spady, a 19-year old student at Colorado State University, who died of alcohol poisoning on September 5, 2004.
Samantha affected people's lives in a unique way. Her friends remember Sam as a fun-loving, sensitive and "amazing" girl who was a champion for the underdog and a good friend. Samantha's death was an unintentional tragedy. We hope that the SAM Spady Foundation, with your support, can prevent a similar tragedy from happening to another beautiful child." |
From 1:00-4:00PM that Saturday, during a regular public ice skating session, 50% of all admission fees will be donated to the foundation. All in attendance that day will also receive a free Sam Spady card that lists the symptoms of alcohol poisoning on the back, in hopes that the card may help one day in saving someone's life.
The event is open to children and adults of all ages. If you are not interested in ice skating, come out anyways and enjoy some of the many other events that will be taking place, including:
-Live Music -Food and Drinks -Raffling of signed Carolina Hurricanes and NC State Athletics Memorabilia -A Presentation on the Sam Spady Foundation by Mark Briscoe, Executive of Sigma Pi Fraternity International and Board Member of the Sam Spady Foundation
Admission is $8 including skate rentals, and there will be long sleeved "Skate for Sam" T-Shirts for sale at a price of $14. A package including admission and a shirt will be available for $20. All proceeds from the raffle and shirt sales will be donated to the foundation.2/12/2006 8:20:23 PM |

i hate to sound crass, but getting alcohol poisoning is not an unintentional tragedy. noone forced that on her, she brought it on herself. awareness is great, but dont talk like it happened unexpectedly. anyone who drinks enough to get alcohol poisoning is irresponsible.2/13/2006 7:02:05 PM |

This is horrible.
If I am not mistaken from my undergraduate fraternity experience- the best way to bring about alcohol awareness to to drink more and often.
Then you learn how to handle your shit. 2/13/2006 11:49:03 PM |

Quote : | "While it has been determined there was no foul play involved in Samantha Spady's death, Fort Collins police reconstructed the last 24 hours of her life and investigated the events that lead to her death.
According to investigators, Spady attended several private off campus parties between 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4 and the time she was found at 6:22 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5, at the Sigma Pi Fraternity house.
The following chronicles her last hours:
Sept. 4, 2004:
5:45 p.m. -- Samantha picked up a girl friend at Westfall Hall on the CSU campus.
6 p.m. -- Arrived at party at 2018 Leicester Way to watch CSU/CU football game. Spady consumed at least 2 beers and 2 shots of tequila, ate some food, and remained there for 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
8 p.m. -- Arrived at 607 Boltz Drive to watch end of the game. She was given a "supersized" cup which she drank beer out of for 1 to 2 hours.
After game -- Spady and girlfriend left in search of ATM and became lost in south Fort Collins. Due to hard rain and poor visibility, Spady hit the center median in the 4500 block of S. Timberline, flattening both driverside tires. She parked her car on Angelo Drive, telephoned her roommate asking for help and walked to nearest residence where she spoke with the owner asking for directions to their location. The homeowner did not believe the two women were intoxicated. Two friends, a male and female, picked them up at 11:10 p.m. and they went to a friend's house for a short time. From there, two carloads of people went to another party on Prospect between Shields and College. They remained there for only a few minutes and left without consuming any alcohol. They regrouped at the Sigma Pi house for a few minutes -- again not consuming any alcohol -- and left for another party.
Sept. 5, 2004:
12 a.m. -- Arrived at a party at 1110 W. Mulberry Street. Spady consumed at least 4-5 beers, may have consumed shots of Vanilla Vodka, and may have engaged in drinking games.
2 a.m. -- Left party and returned to Sigma Pi house. Approximately 25 people present. Spady was provided with beer.
3:30 a.m. -- Most people left Sigma Pi house. Spady and 7-10 people remained and shared 1 to 2 bottles of McCormick Vanilla Vodka.
4:30 a.m.-5:30 a.m. -- Spady became intoxicated to the point where she could not stand up. Two friends helped Spady to the spare room. Her girlfriend tried to persuade her to walk back to the dorm with her; Spady was not able to do so. She was last seen lying on the couch on her stomach, using her hands as a pillow.
6:22 p.m. -- A fraternity member who lived off-site discovered Spady’s body while giving his mother a tour of the house " |
that would be a shitty way to find a dead girl in your fraternity house....with your mother by your side.

a girl that drank herself to death has her own foundation? wonder why she has one as opposed to other people that drink themselves to death - parents rich enough to start one up i guess? 2/14/2006 10:38:48 AM |

i wonder if it was a condition of the lawsuit for all Sigma Pi chapters to raise money/awareness for Sam's foundation
....i guess it's the least they could do 2/14/2006 10:40:23 AM |

when a brother drank himself to death a few years ago - all we had to do was make sure pledges watched a dvd on his situation and what to do and what not to do during pledge ed and have them fill out a form saying they saw it - if that's the case their lawyers should have worked harder 2/14/2006 10:42:31 AM |

^4 From what I know, Sam Spady showed up to the Sigma Pi house intoxicated; however, I believe she continued to drink once she got there. She passed out there, and some of the brothers took her upstairs. The next day, she was found dead in one of the rooms. I believe that's correct.

Yet, hundreds of students do it, which is why the foundation is important in regard to promoting alcohol poisoning awareness.
I see your point, tho.

Yeah, Sam Spady's parents started the foundation.

If I'm correct in assuming that her parents created the foundation, I doubt it would have mattered. But who knows? Parents can be weird sometimes.

this reminds me of the rich kid back in Hickory who one night got drunk out on his boat, with some friends, and slammed the boat into an old bridge pilling. he drowned b/c he was too drunk to swim after he was thrown from the boat. and then got a library named after him. 2/14/2006 11:20:47 AM |

they shouldnt say:

it was intentional. noone forced her to drink that much. they should change their mission statement.2/14/2006 4:21:19 PM |

I think you are trying to make more explicit the causual relationship & the responsiblity. it doesn't sound like she intended to kill herself. if i were to handle a gun i wasn't familiar with I might wound or kill myself... I don't think you could call that intentional, but I think it would be fair to say that it was self induced & I was responsible.
The distinction is more clear in our terminology for causing anothers death. Murder if its intentional, manslaughter if its unintentional (but still bearing some level of responsiblity).
Regardless of the terms... it still sounds like a good event which may be beneficial since they are passing out these "card that lists the symptoms of alcohol poisoning on the back" 2/14/2006 5:35:18 PM |

it should be changed to "preventable" because it was. even if she was irresponsible, presumably had the people who put her to bed been aware of the signs of slcohol poisoning, she might be alive. Thats my take on the intention of the charity. Stopping drinking is next to impossible, getting people aware of the signs when people need medical attention is a lot more plausible. 2/14/2006 6:22:53 PM |

You've pointed out multiple times that they should change their statement so that it doesn't include of "Samantha's death was an unintentional tragedy" when it seemed like you were upset by a meaning that word doesn't have. I was only pointing out the terminology.
I think everyone already agrees that drinking yourself to death isn't a good thing, and thats exactly way they were having a preventive event. Of course drinking yourself to death is irresponsible, but I think this seems like a healthy and responsible way of dealing with the death of a loved one on the parents behalf.
