i am a junior in accounting and i have yet to use my "12 hrs" of credit only classes. i am currently taking HI216 online and it is a complete bitch, but HI is a requirement and i cant "credit only" my only HI class. i was wondering if i could take the HI216 as credit only, use as one of my electives, and then in the fall take another HI class and use that as my requirement (take it for a grade). HELP!!! 2/14/2006 7:46:03 PM |

YES As long as you have hours open in your "restricted" electives (which for ACC majors is basically your free electives) then you can take the class for credit only and it will still go towards your degree (as an elective) as long as you pass the course. You can take another history later on to fulfill your HI requirement. You can even take an HI somewhere else (ie a community college over the summer) and transfer it back.
If you do not have room in your restricted electives, you can still take the course credit only, but it will fall into your "non degree/additional" courses area and it is basically an extra course and not going toward the degree at all, but it does get you out of sweating a grade in the class if it is driving you nuts. 2/14/2006 8:58:07 PM |

what if you want to use the course for a minor? say, german 300-level courses. 2/14/2006 9:17:07 PM |

Normally, a minor course might show up in free electives in your major. While free electives (up to 12 hours) can be taken for credit only, IF the course is being used as a course for a minor or another major (double major), it CANNOT be taken for credit only.
So, think of your situation this way- do you stay in the german course for a grade and use it toward the minor? Or, do you take it credit only, use it toward your free electives, knowing that you will need to take another course to fulfill that spot in the minor? Those are your options.
hope this helps.
PM if you want and let me know how you are doing in the course in question and we can evaluate your situation more closely.

hey wolfee, i have a query as well....
So we can take credit only option for 'restricted' electives or only for 'free' electives?
If we can take credit only option for restricted elective, do we need only a 70/C- to pass or would a D be sufficient as well to get an 'S' grade? Will this then fulfill your remaining credits in the restricted elective section, and count towards your accumulated credits for graduation?
Thanks in advance

No Ds get S grades. Only C- and above get S grades. Anything lower is a U. Let me know what your major is and I can investigate the restricted elective option. 2/14/2006 9:53:03 PM |

Well I have a restricted elective option and this class is going to jump to the restricted electives section as stated by my advisor. So can I have that be counted to my overall graduation hours by taking it as credit? 2/14/2006 10:02:08 PM |

You MAY NOT take it for credit only if it is a restricted elective- sorry-don't mean to be a spoil sport. You have sufficient free elective hours in your degree where you could use your credit only option. ACC majors are different. Since they have NO free electives, their restricted electives function more like free electives ( in their case, they are really free electives, but are restricted since they cannot include any BUS courses).
You (anyone) can tell by pulling up your degree audit. HEre is a sample: https://packtracks.ncsu.edu/scripts/RegRec/adadgbk.pl?curr=BS&dgr_key=11BLS%20%202036%20&title=BIOLOGICAL%20SCIENCES&
and look next to the restricted electives. vs. free electives. There is an "S" in the right hand column if you can take a course in that grouping for credit only. Just be mindful that there is no greater number than 12 on any given degree 2/14/2006 10:12:21 PM |

Thanks Wolfee, as I knew that already.
My point was that in my free electives they put certain courses unnecessarily grouped there, and I want them to transfer to the restricted area, where then I can take this course MB 455 (not required) for my credit only FREE ELECTIVE. This is feasible right, or is it better to get with advisor on this? 2/14/2006 10:20:14 PM |

I'm a BUS major and have to take 17 hours of "Free Electives".
I've taken 9 out of those 17 hours for GRADES. Can I take the remaining 8 hours (it'll actually be 9 since I'll take 3 3-credit hour courses) for credit only and still graduate?
I don't wanna jack that up because they'll be my last 3 courses and I wanna be worry-free over those grades.

^^ you need to have courses on your degree audit moved around. Sometimes a course can go in more than one area. The degree audit is programmed to put them in a certain place as a default, but if they are eligible to be in another area, they can be moved. You can see Dr. Bill Grant, Jenny Ellerbe in BLS or folks in the main academic affairs office in Patterson to have the courses moved. Then you can use your other course as a free elective and take it for credit only.
^Sounds like you should be able to do that. PM your student ID and I will double check your ADA to make sure that is the case. You need to pass them though
