^also i've been holding off on buying a new tv waiting for 1080p to make a stronger presence. I think i'm just gonna go buy a 720p lcd instead. Thoughts on 1080p?
2/17/2006 3:43:01 PM
save the moneygo with 720
2/17/2006 3:43:53 PM
On top of that, i've heard that for screens smaller than 40"... 1080p won't be a noticeable difference, especially when compared to the step from 480i to 720p
2/17/2006 3:45:59 PM
^ People who say that don't know what they are talking about.Sure, some people won't be able to see the difference, but a lot of people will. If you're the kind of person to notice something like picture quality, then you'll see the difference.

find me 10 channels that broadcast 1080p in raleigh in the next month and ill buy your tvhell, find me 20 that broadcast 720pI think you should wait for the video source before you buy the displayI mean that makes senseThat being saidGo waste your money on whatever you think will be popular in 2 years
2/17/2006 5:51:13 PM
^ Both 1080p and 720p monitors are capable of displaying 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i.
2/17/2006 10:20:33 PM
i don't get you backwards ass poor people. If 1080p can do everything a 720p screen can do and more. why buy 720p now and 1080p 6-12 months from now? save yourself the money and just get whats going to last without having to upgrade.
2/17/2006 10:30:59 PM
a 1080p native monitor will look like garbage displaying less than 1080p**not including crts
2/17/2006 10:32:01 PM
Well, then, a 1080p monitor would always look like garbage, because no one is broadcasting in 1080p.
2/17/2006 10:42:22 PM
Well... if i wasn't so damn poor... i might buy a $500 hd-dvd player... or a $1000 bluray player after the HDCP fiasco ends. Better yet, since the PS3 will support dual 1080p displays, i should break down and buy 2 right. And while we're at it, name one display that accepts 1080p signals (through HDMI) that i can buy in person in the triangle area. The sony xbr sxrd displays have a pretty decent upconvert to 1080p so most things look pretty decent.

im perfectly happy with my cheap-ass 1080i tv

There's an advantage to not having money: you don't have to worry about even being tempted to waste money on being on the cutting edge.
2/18/2006 4:51:24 PM
plus it encourages you to buy a sexy but heavy crt.
2/18/2006 5:11:26 PM
Well, CRT is my favorite anyways. I dont normally move or lift a TV i watch, so weight doesnt matter.
2/18/2006 7:13:17 PM
I doI say Barnabas, there's a baby in this refuse bin!
2/18/2006 9:27:12 PM
i'm actually saving up for one of those sed displayshttp://www.engadget.com/2006/01/08/sed-up-close-and-personal/
2/19/2006 12:05:31 AM
you don't need an "HD DVD player" - just buy a dvd player with progressive scan and component outs - $30 at any major retailer should do it.
2/19/2006 8:51:16 AM
i am a 138lbs man quinn. i may not move a tv much, but it is a factor. my new tv is 150 which aint so bad for me and someone else, but is approaching the border for me. i didnt buy a decently priced sony 36" cuz it weighed 200+ lbs heh. but yeah they do look sexy and last forever.
2/19/2006 9:04:25 AM
http://esupport.sony.com/perl/model-home.pl?mdl=KV40XBR800it weighs like a bazillion pounds.but it was cheap and will probably never move from its spot ever.

I'm rockin' a 720p plasma; love it's color depth and clarity. If I was in the market right now I'd get around 32-36" plasma with the apps. Might consider a Vizio for their cooler apps, but still a fan of panasonic plasma. And HDCP sucks balls; both as a content producer and consumer.
9/14/2010 8:08:54 PM
^I will swear by Panasonic Plasma. Love my 42". Although I will say my 23" Samsung LCD gives it a run for the money on my computer.
9/14/2010 9:55:35 PM
^too bad they all have a fatal flaw in the backlight that causes them to go permanently to about 50% brightness after a year of usage.
9/14/2010 11:41:50 PM
^Samsungs do? Or Pannys?
9/15/2010 12:42:52 AM
noen's talking about the panasonic plasmas.http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/04/panasonic-cops-to-rising-black-levels-in-its-plasma-hdtvs-but-q/I didn't read much about this when that article was released (which was like a week after my dad bought a G1, so I was mildly interested at the time) but I would have thought they could have fixed the issue with a firmware update or something, but it looks like it's more complicated than that. I assume (?) that newer models don't have this issue. but I don't know for sure.
9/15/2010 12:54:16 AM
It's been prevalent in EVERY plasma they make since 2008.It's not fixed in the 2010 models either.I was choosing between Samsung and Panasonic, and the 100 page threads about this on AVSForum are what ultimately steered me to Samsung. Panasonic plasmas are the best out there ( Pioneer is out of the plasma game), but I am pretty damn impressed with Samsung. They (Samsung) have been really damn good about regular firmware updates to fix and improve their sets. I havent' needed anything, pretty much in love with my 7000 series plasma.[Edited on September 15, 2010 at 1:42 AM. Reason : .]

The panasonic problems come only to the people who are running the thing at 100% brightness in the first place. Mine sits around 65% and I've never seen this varying backlight issue. These are probably the people who like to see green and red at 2000% saturation instead of a calibrated setting.

we still don't have any 1080p channels. It's been four years. Outside of sports there isn't much point I suppose .my favorite tv is JUSTIN tv.[Edited on September 17, 2010 at 8:03 AM. Reason : the compression artifacts means they care]
9/17/2010 8:01:37 AM
If a 720p channel is in 3D, it's 2160p.
