I've got a friend who owns a blue m3 with a carbon hood and lowered suspension, aftermarket seats, intake, exhaust, wheels who may be getting a new job and for whatever reason believes that his car is too racy to be respectable and is probably going to get a 2nd car if he gets the job. I don't know who is paying for the 2nd car, whether it will be him with his new wages, his parents, or whether the job has some partially paid company car issue, but it involves lots of driving up and down the coast. He figures it needs to be MODEST with a capital M (no wrxs, no bmw M'sm in case any of you were thinking e36 4dr with poverty wheels as a sleeper), definitely 4 doors, reliable, good gas mileage, has a manual transmission and costs 10-14k. I don't know why that's the range, I don't know why something like a classy unmodified coupe like a babied low-mileage for its years sc300 wouldn't cut it. I figure he has tons of options, but he specified three (sets of) cars in particular

recent VW jetta or Passat, possibly Tdi
4 yrs/older audi a4 1.8t (claims he found a 2002 with 35k mi for $15k)
recent honda accord

Now, I can't speak for any of the cars specifically as I haven't owned any of the above, and I absolutely will not reference a "who cares if we're wrong" book like consumer reports, so let's hear what you think. I still think he ought to look at something more modest than what he has, but it can still be fun, I don't think he should rule out 2 drs...

the added twist is that he thinks he can get a vw dealer friend (not in the local area, he's in DC) to get him a sweet deal on an extended warranty, clouding the issue of the expense of owning something like a VW vs a honda....

aight then.

keep the m3 who the fuck cares if it's too racey for the job. if it's a 4 door your straight. so ppl like to drive sports cars.. i doubt he would get fired for that shit. tell him to stop being a fag and keep the m3. if he wants ill trade my less riced celica for the m3, only to help him out of course.

oh yeah make sure to tell him that his mom needs to get the rash on her right lip checked out. it's really bothering me lately.

lol

I used to pull up to work in my jacked up trooper covered in mud all the time. The director of my department, who just happened to be British at the time would come to me and say ... "WHere the HELL did you take that thing!?!?!? Don't park it next to my car (BMW)!"

In short, people do notice what you drive when you're in a professional environment, but I wouldn't worry about a riced out M3.

Is this job the kid's first "real job?" I'd worry about making a good impression in the office doing my work than I would with my car. Plus how much money does he think he's going to be making? Any time you have your first real job, you always think you're going to be living high on the hog.

Ain't that a serious misconception. Of course, I have more bills than the average recent graduate, but damn, I ain't got a whole lot of room to play.

I'm not sure why he feels the need to downgrade his car for a job. Now, if he had to drive clients around and felt that a modified M3 wasn't professional enough (the carbon hood and aftermarket seats are a bit over-the-top), I might understand. But then one would think he wouldn't want a Modest vehicle.

And of what he chose, I wouldn't consider an A4 Modest; it's more of an entry-level sports/luxury sedan. So I'd cross that one of the list.

Get a Corolla or a Civic sedan or wait a few months and get a Yaris.

lol. hard to draw the line between modest and humble. I imagine he doesn't wanna show up in a econobox, and he isn't downgrading, he's keeping the m3. I think it is a little unnecessary, but it was a fun q...

you're not gonna get better gas mileage than the TDi (for a comparable sized car)

4-cyl Camry. It's the de facto standard for cheap people haulers that will last forever.
