Can anyone recommend a place to go hiking/camping during spring break? I am looking for about a 30-mile round trip hike to a stream or river in the mountains either in NC or TN. Thanks for any help.

Stone Mountain State Park in Trap Hill, NC is ok. The camping is probably better than the hiking, especially if it is rainy. Sliding down Stone Mountain to your death doesn't make for a very good spring break.

Definitely - the AT runs through there and there are a ton of trails. You can even stop by Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) and watch a basketball game.

gunzz, I have been to linville gorge area many times, brevard area, highlands, and around pilot mountain. Also around some public game lands near Spruce Pine. Just want to get out and see some new scenery.

Shining Rock WIlderness area and Art Loeb Trail

not sure if its 30 miles roundtrip but its Def a long haul

The trail follows a ridge that tops out on several bald mountains, pretty cool place

Tsali campground in Robbinsville. Miles and miles of trails and is right near Nantahala River.

I second the Shining Rock Wilderness.

Also, Looking Glass Rock is nice.

I like this area* a lot as well: http://n2backpacking.com/my_hikes/virginia/rhodo%20gap%2010_95D.htm

If you go on the Blue Ridge Parkway you can get a camping spot for 15 bucks that has a place for your tent and a place for your campfire. There is hiking all around and you are right on a huge lake. I dont remember the name of the Lake but it was one of the camping places right on the parkway. Great lake with great fishing. Very few park rangers patrol so you can do about anything you want.
