we burned all the magazines, newspaper, junkmail in the house a month or so ago while playing ps2 and all three of us had some of the worst headaches ever for about six hours. 2/20/2006 11:13:01 PM |

ugh, don't screw around with galvanized fumes. it'll give you some bad times if you inhale enough. 2/20/2006 11:20:21 PM |

I'm fucked.
On another note, my latest creation is coming together fairly well. I really wish I had a chop saw though. That and a small notcher.

HF has chop saws for ~50 bucks alot of times if you don't care about super precision cuts or aren't working with real thick stuff. lowes has nice deals on name brands also from time to time. HF also carries a cheap notcher you can attach a drill to that works decent for smaller stuff.
what are you building? if you're just using galvanized because it's what you have, you can sand/grind off the coating around the weld area to greatly reduce fumes. if you need it to have as much coating as possible, then carry on. i'd suggest at least a painters type mask though, if not something with a filter. that stuff has put me on my ass before and my head hanging over a toilet. it creeps up on you hours later too. 2/20/2006 11:47:40 PM |

some of you guys that CAN weld galvanized shit... we need some brackets added to our boat trailer. If we supply the materials and a case of beer, would one of you guys be willing to lend us a hand? 2/21/2006 1:16:35 PM |

Any of us that has a welder can do it. The catch is that it's a health hazard--the fumes are toxic.
My chest is hurting a little today...I'll be sanding off that shit tonite! 2/21/2006 1:22:05 PM |

the bracket itself wont be galvanic but the trailer is. Maybe I can just get the brackets welded up and we can bolt them to the tongue instead.
don't want to be putting you guys through health probs. 2/21/2006 1:27:24 PM |

That's what they made grinders for. Plain old zinc dust is great for makin' yer pecker hard. 2/21/2006 1:29:19 PM |

^^ha, you're telling that to someone who frequently welds for hours in nothing but shorts and rainbows. seriously though, a couple passes on some brackets isn't a big deal. it's long passes or prolonged welding on it that will pwn joo. hell, welding fumes in general aren't exactly okay to breathe. ^lol
