i'd say before 79

77-79 were some pretty badass shows

80's are hit or miss

90's were blah

American Beauty is a great album. Its different from many of the others b/c its more focused. Their isn't as much random jam sessions or drum solo sessions like you'd expect from a live album. Ripple is one of my favorite songs.

Also get In the Dark. This CD was the one that gained them a lot of commercial praise (Touch of Grey was a top 10) but it is still one of their best studio albums IMO and will have a lot of recognizable material.

and one last thing..if you ever want to trip acid or mushrooms pick up Infrared Roses

Anthum of the Sun is one of my favorite studio albums (i'm not counting Dick's Picks or other later releases). The Alligator jam on here is sick. I haven't heard the bonus tracks b/c I only have this on vinyl.

Referring to Rich's advice "keep it before 1974", that is the same thing that the guy at School Kids said. I don't necessarily agree with that though.

I have started to listen to Jerry's solo cds and he got up with some jazz musicans around '74 and made some great music.

If what Rich and others say is true then does anybody out there know why The Dead lost their touch after 1974? Did it have to do with Jerry's solo career or anything?

So if you're looking for those shows, find some originals.

If this is what you're into, look for Legion of Mary. Its basically Jerry and Merl Saunders with some other tight musicians playing very jazzy, funky music. Some incarnations of Jerry Garcia Band are especially tight too.

that was probably me. i just feel like everything they did before then was awesome. this isn't saying that post-74 isn't good, because that's not true, but it certainly gets a bit more hit or miss.

Workingman's Dead is my favorite, but there is really no arguing that their studio peak was between '70 and '75. Wake of the Flood, From the Mars Hotel, and Blues From Allah (all from this period) are solid albums. I also like Terrapin Station ('77). As far as live goes, I really always go back to shows from the '76-'78 period. Jerry's voice is weaker than the earlier years, but the band was never tighter, and the setlists were usually great.
