the tiptronic transmission, in high end cars like that, is actually the sportier option. the gearbox is f1 technology and the shifts come a lot faster. try to find a ferrari made recently with a plain jane manual. 3/7/2006 10:25:09 AM |

^ true
but arguing about the tiptronic tranny is pretty fucking retarded... the fastest cars in the world use it or similar, not a traditional manual 3/7/2006 10:44:21 AM |

^^^you couldn't be more wrong. The Tiptronic is the original automatic that you can shift yourself. But guess what, thats not a good thing. Its got a torque converter and has slower shifts than a manual.
Its not even on the same playing field as the Ferrari F1 type tranny or BMW's SMG tranny. It does not have a clutch.
Porsche is going to release a version of the new 911 Turbo with a version of the DSG (currently used by Audi and VW, but in fact invented by Porsche), however the 996 911s were only available with a 6sp or 5sp AUTO. 3/7/2006 1:13:22 PM |

hmm, well I'm pretty sure most talented drivers can upshift faster than an auto, but I could be wrong.
But I have no doubt they can downshift faster than an auto. 3/7/2006 1:25:54 PM |

There is nothing wrong with a Tiptronic-style transmission, in a Mercedes or Aston Martin. I wouldn't want one in a performance car like a Porsche. 3/7/2006 1:27:46 PM |

TKE-Teg is right about Porsche's tiptronic not being as quick as the Ferrari and BMW's SMG. They must have improved it though because I was reading some performance numbers on the 997 and they listed the tiptronic as having better 0-60 and quarter mile times.
Even so, I'd still get the manual. It's just more fun to drive. 3/7/2006 1:39:41 PM |

^they haven't really done anything. Its b/c before launch they can load up the torque converter and get the turbos spooling. 3/7/2006 1:48:06 PM |

ah, that makes sense. but i think they had the GT3 listed as having better times too. and that doesn't have any turbos (of course). 3/7/2006 1:51:22 PM |
