with the basketball coaching situation?

even if the school wants to keep him, is there too much momentum the other way to do it?

i feel like if he was going to stay, someone would have made an announcement by now to curb the rumors. they havent, and it seems to swirled out of control.

in the past someone would come out and issue a statement, much like they did after that stupid car tagging thing at a game.

its never been to the point where people are writing as if herb is as good as gone, and herb never lost his cool with a "fan" before. that to me was a sign that he is tired of the bullshit.

i hope he stays

It's never been this bad, not even in his fifth year (when we tanked after the UMd game). I want Herb to stay, but I am starting to think that we are "past the point of no return."

You do have an interesting point that no one has made a statement.

Though, I can imagine a scenario behind the scenes where Fowler talked to Herb asking if he wanted a statement made and Herb said no need to do that and not give the bad fans anything to feed on.

I think if all the hate isn't too much of a distraction, that it might be just the "chip on the shoulder" this team needs to get motivated. Assuming we aren't ice cold, I imagine we could beat Cal. and probably give a valiant but losing effort for Texas.

man, i have only been a state fan the past couple years, but i've really liked herb so far. he has a clean reputation and seems to recruit only players that also have good character. i really think that the character of the players on a team really determines the amount of success that team enjoys. i am not content with simply going to the tourney every year but it really does seem that herb has gradually been doing better each successive year. i figure give him a couple more years since he has done so well in revamping our recruiting and give him a shot with this wright kid. if herb still cant accomplish anything after bringing in much better talent, then you can blame his coaching. but up til recently he really hasn't been having huge recruiting years where the class ranks in the top 20 nationally. yeah we had hodge and that was big, but it wasn't like hodge came in with other big recruits like wright is supposed to help bring in.

Watkins & Powell??

Sure Powell wasnt ranked THAT high, but since he ended up being as good as Hodge i think he should count.

Also we had just gotten Scooter (~top ten) and Melvin the year before that... and Damien Wilkens (an even bigger recruit than Hodge)... and dont forget Marshall Williams (ranked higher than all but Hodge, Wilkens, and Scooter).

Recruiting has never been the problem, the problem has been lack of development and RETENTION of our key players.

Im not gonna put all the blame for Marshall williams on Herb, but Wilkens & Powell are on Herb.

Fowler did make a statement. In response to a discussion about Herb haters, Fowler said that Herb is not the type of guy to back down from challenges.

And, yes, all the hate will affect Herb's recruiting ability.

And, yes, Herb is most definitely starting to get fed up.

But there was a statement from Fowler essentially saying that he would stay.

"Title would be super for Sendek
Maybe winning ACC Tournament would silence 'Herb haters'

Staff Photos by Ethan Hyman
Chip Alexander, Staff Writer

N.C. State basketball coach Herb Sendek came strolling in for his radio show this week with a smile, wearing a black-and-gold Pittsburgh Steelers T-shirt and a matching cap that read "Super Bowl champions."
State fans in the Bobby Murray Chevrolet showroom filled rows of red seats that used to be in Reynolds Coliseum, a reminder of the Pack's past basketball glory, and gave the coach a round of applause.

But as Sendek enters his 10th ACC Tournament, with the Pack facing Wake Forest today at the Greensboro Coliseum, there are other State fans who are not clapping for the coach. Some would rather Sendek show off a new T-shirt, with "ACC champions" on it. Others would prefer Sendek consider a job at another school -- not be fired, mind you, but just move on.

To hear some of the complaints, an observer might think the Pack was 8-21 this season, not 21-8. The "Herb haters," as Sendek's most severe critics often are called, were at their loudest after the Pack's 95-71 loss to North Carolina at the RBC Center in February, and they continued to bay as State lost three straight to end the regular season.

"What will it take to get behind Herb? To start, he'll have to win the ACC Tournament this year and advance to an Elite Eight [game] or better in the NCAAs," said Tony Baker of Warner Robins, Ga., a 1988 NCSU graduate.

In response to the criticism, Sendek has revealed occasional flashes of anger.

Questioned by a caller on his radio show two weeks ago about the losses to UNC and Boston College, he answered pointedly.
HE STARTS GETTING SASSIER THAN HE HAS EVER BEEN (FED UP) HERE:

"All this negative stuff, our guys don't deserve it," he said. "We need to stop all this nonsense."

Moments later, another caller said the players didn't appear to play with urgency when the Pack trailed in games. More anger.

"That's ridiculous," Sendek said. "They're pouring their hearts out."

State senior guard Tony Bethel said he usually tunes out what is being said about Sendek and the team.

"I thought it was part of the business," he said. "But this year, hearing some things made me very disappointed and sometimes angry. Coach has been successful, and he's winning. What more can you ask for?"

Being competitive with Carolina and Duke, some fans would say. Winning championships. But would winning an ACC title this week unite the Wolfpack fan base?

"I can't speak to other people's happiness," Sendek said. "How do I know how many wins it would take before somebody I don't know would be happy? Happiness is not something you can give somebody. Happiness is a gift you must give yourself. It must come from within."

Sendek has a 13-9 ACC Tournament record -- 8-1 in opening-round games. He has taken three teams to the finals but has yet to win it. State's last ACC championship was in 1987, when Jim Valvano won his second title.

NCSU athletics director Lee Fowler said that, after 10 years, people have formed firm opinions about the coach that may not be changed by a championship.

"I don't think Mike Krzyzewski is liked by all Duke fans," Fowler said. "I don't know anything that would get everybody off [Sendek]."

Fowler said he senses the frustration of State fans. Losing at Duke was one thing. But the two losses to the Tar Heels, who lost the top seven scorers off their 2005 national championship team, had some fans seething.

"I think the emotion is, 'Oh, my gosh, we can't beat Duke, now when Carolina is having a down year we can't beat 'em,' " Fowler said. "I hear that from everybody. And, 'They'll be better from now on, so we'll never beat 'em -- we've got to do something.' "

Nancy McCarthy, a Wolfpack Club member from Raleigh, is one of those people.

"I think he's a good coach who runs a clean program and has people on his teams who are actually college material and will have productive lives later on," she said.

But McCarthy said she would like to see more passion from Sendek.

"I'd like to see him get more fired up and really get the players and crowd fired up," she said.

Some fans would like Sendek to ditch the Pack's motion offense, even though State has used it to reach the NCAA Tournament each of the past four seasons. A constant complaint is that there are too many 3-point shots and that center Cedric Simmons doesn't touch the ball enough inside. Another is that Sendek and his staff come up lacking in late-game strategy.

Bobby Purcell, the executive director of the Wolfpack Club, hears all that and more.

"I think overall our members think it's been a good season," Purcell said. "But when you have two tough losses at home like Carolina and BC, it definitely changes the mood."

Asked if Wolfpack Club members who don't support Sendek were noisy yet small in number, Purcell said, "I don't know how many there are. I don't know how to gauge it.

"But winning always unifies people. I think we have a great team, a team capable of going all the way to the Final Four."

And after the season? Some major programs could have coaching openings -- Missouri, Cincinnati, Indiana. Could Sendek decide he is weary of knocking heads with Krzyzewski and UNC coach Roy Williams?

Sendek said Wednesday that there had been "no conversations" with any school, saying his "total focus" was on the Pack. His contract runs through June 30, 2010.

Fowler expects Sendek to remain the Wolfpack coach, saying, "He's not a guy that runs from challenges."

How about instead of the fucking athletic director giving a statement, how about Herb himself make a statement??????????????????????

I mean he doesnt have to go off on the fans, but he can address some of their complaints. This would help tremendously. I mean people still may hate him, but it might at least shut them up so he can go about his business and not have it affect recruiting.

I'm sorry but Im putting Powell on Herb.

If Herb hadnt given so much leniency to Hodge and been so restrictive of Powell, he probably would have come back for another year.

What Herb did to Powell was wrong, particularly after the way he carried us INTO the NCAA tourney his last year. We dont even make the tournament if its not for Powell getting the best of Chris Bosh, Darius Songailia, and Shelden Williams.

Damien Wilkens was a mild disappointment at State because he was miscast. He was NOT a shooter. You cant just put a guy who cant shoot in an offense and expect him to chuck up threes.

He still nearly had a triple double against FSU and he was still a good passer & rebounder.

If we have Damien Wilkens in '01-'02 there is a good chance we would have made the sweet 16 that year cause we nearly beat UConn (grrr, just thinking about this game makes me mad at Cliff for getting stripped in the backcourt by Taliek Fucking Brown).

God now you got me thinking about Cliff. Great senior year but i cant get over his gaffs that cost us the game against Cal three years ago.

"It's so long, life of denial
The love you give to me
And when you smile
It warms my heart and me
Oh baby can't you see
I like to feel the passion to the point of no return
Oh baby, I will be in full reaction
I want to take you in my arms
You're taking me to the point of no return
You're taking me to the point of no return"
