i dunno if I'd want him here though. he's definitely not as bad as terrell owens with the attitude, but having both him and steve smith would defintely help. maybe henning could keep him under control.

"2:46 pm | Keyshawn Johnson favoring the Panthers
PAT YASINSKAS
pyasinskas@charlotteobserver.com

Free agent wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson said twice Wednesday afternoon he'd like to play for the Carolina Panthers.

The bigger question might be if the Panthers are interested in Johnson.

The team has a long-standing policy of not commenting on free-agent interest.

Johnson told the Fort Worth Star Telegram he had spoken with the Panthers. On Sirius NFL Radio an hour later, Johnson said he had not talked to any teams yet. But he went on to list several teams he thought might be good fits and the Panthers were on the list. Johnson also singled out quarterback Jake Delhomme and receiver Steve Smith as players he'd like to play with.

In the radio interview, Johnson also said there was a good chance he would re-sign with the Dallas Cowboys, who released him Tuesday in a salary cap move.

The flamboyant Johnson might not seem like the type of player the image-conscious Panthers normally would pursue. But Carolina offensive coordinator Dan Henning had a good relationship when they worked together with the Jets and he could be Johnson's biggest advocate. Johnson frequently has said Henning is the best coordinator he ever played for.

The Panthers are looking for help at wide receiver and, at least, want someone to challenge Keary Colbert for the starting job opposite Smith.

Colbert's production was mediocre last season and the Panthers would like to have offensive weapons other than Smith.

Pairing Johnson with Smith could be a good fit because the Panthers would be able to capitalize on Smith's speed and Johnson's size. At 6-foot-4 and 211 pounds, Johnson is a strong possession receiver. He had 71 catches for 839 yards and six touchdowns for the Dallas Cowboys last year.

Although Johnson may seem like a fit on the field, the Panthers likely would want assurances Johnson would fit in the locker room. Johnson had a well-publicized feud with Tampa Bay coach John Gruden that led to his departure from the Bucs after the 2003 season. While with the Jets early in his career, Johnson often was outspoken when he didn't feel enough passes were being thrown his way.

Johnson's age, 34, and asking price also could keep the Panthers from making a strong move. Johnson said he turned down an offer of $2.5 million for this year to stay with the Cowboys. "

he's showing interest in a CHECK

him and steve smith, in my opinion, couldnt exist on the same team, cause i dont see distribution going much to keyshawn seeing as he's spotty as fuck

Keyshawn could be a great asset to the panthers...but at what cost? I don't know if I can take or would want to put up with his attitude and antics (considering they have not helped him be a great player). But he is an athlete and could be big in the offense...but I am willing to bet he would want all the passes and would cause problems with Smith...

^^and he wants to go to a superbowl contender i'm sure

i think ANY receiver that came to Carolina would do so knowing full well that Smitty is the #1 receiver

well they kept him under control in dallas

I think with as much as the panthers throw the ball in the first place, this wouldnt be a problem for us.

Plus, he might be older and slower, but none of our other receivers past Smith and Prohel can consistently catch balls that hit them in the hands.

the henning thing kinda makes it a little less risky

if you think about it, paying the money for him would kinda be like paying money to have a complete steve smith, because teams wouldnt be able to concentrate on just him with keyshawn on the opposite side, as they did later this past season with a Drew Carter/Keary Colbert over there

ah christ i must have missed that about Koren.

Well shit... that contract is a little steep for us anyway.

Man... i hate keyshawn.

10 years in the league and he STILL cant figure out he's nothing more than a glorified possession receiver.

We do happen to be in the market for one of those though

4 million a year is nothin in today's free agency. David Givens and Randal-El both got considerably more than that, and neither reciever approaches KRob physically.

There are not a whole lot of decent recievers left out there. There are a couple of RFA's like Nate Burleson, but the only big name UFA's left are Owens and Keyshawn.

Proehl?

Keyshawn would be a very nice pickup if Fox could pull as much respect from him as Parcells did.

Screw it, draft a reciever in the 3rd round. Have Carter work on his hands and make him the 2nd guy, he has great talent, if he didn't drop passes he would be a great #2

And maybe Colbert gets out of his sophmore slump.

I dont think it'll be a problem with them coexisting, its pretty evident that it's Steve Smith's team and no one is going to come in and take that away from him. Plus, if you look at the last couple of seasons, Keyshaun hasnt even been the Cowboys go to receiver, Terry Glenn was. I think that Keyshaun could be a good compliment to Steve, and if we are winning games and Keyshaun gets a few catches per game while doing so, he'll keep his mouth shut

We need a damn running back that's worth a shit first. If we get a good one and get back to playing Fox ball, when we do need to throw it Steve Smiff will be there. Delhomme is to inconsistant to be able to be haulin passes all the time to two receivers who think they should be catching 10 a game.

the panthers have NEVER signed a player with the attitude and discipline problems that Keyshawn supposedly has

hell, we cut a top-5 punter, arguably the best in the league, due to things that looked negative to the team's image in Sauerbrun

the Henning ties give it more of a chance than some other similar players but I just don't see it

however if he had a press conference and explicitly said he:

a. knew full well Smith was the #1 guy
b. was prepared to be a secondary or tertiary receiver and respect the coaching staff
c. admitted he was going to be a possession WR for Carolina

I would give him a shot, but not for too much money, that goes without saying
