I need to have my knee examined soon, it has been giving me trouble for the past 3 years since my hip surgery. Can anyone recommend a good knee doctor/orthopedic doc in the Cary/Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area?
I've got health coverage through United Healthcare, has anyone dealt with them before? 3/17/2006 11:04:16 AM |

Dr Smith! I had an ACL injury when I was in middle school and he provided excellent care. He has a background in athletics so he understands what it takes to get an athlete back on his/her feet (both emotionally and physically). Here's a blurb about him:
""Dr. Lyman Smith Title: Orthopedic Consultant Education: Dr. Smith was educated at Duke University and the Duke University School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency at the University of Virginia and received a fellowship in sports medicine at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Smith currently serves as a clinical assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.
Dr. Lyman Smith is orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine. He has practiced at Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic since 1991 and served as a team orthopedist at N.C. State University for several years.
As a former tackle with the National Football League's Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings, Dr. Smith has a special interest in sports-related injuries. In addition to his work with the Wolfpack, Dr. Smith has worked as team orthopedist for the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes, the Carolina Cobras of the Arena Football League, and several local high schools (East Wake, Enloe, Garner).
Dr. Smith is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. His community involvement includes serving on the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness & Health. ""

i would stay away from cary ortho. They have good doctors, but always feel rushed, and pack their appointments in tightly. Try raleigh ortho, or go to dukehealth.org. You will most likely be paying the same if you have insurance 3/17/2006 1:55:07 PM |

i've gotten a recommendation for Dr. David Fajgenbaum at the Bone and Joint Surgery Clinic in Raleigh, and he's covered by my health insurance
if they recommend any surgery though, I'll def get a second opinion with someone else, I got fucked over 3 years ago when the doc in Greensboro told me that there was nothing wrong with my knee. Stay away from Dr. Marcus Duda in G'boro. 3/17/2006 2:08:24 PM |

If you are looking into having surgery I would recommend Dr. Garrett.

I've been to Raleigh Ortho recently for back issues, so I'll probably just end up there again based on this thread, but I was wondering if anyone else had any more experiences in the past 2 years since this thread?
Also, has anyone been to a doc to analyze their gait for any mal alignments and regarding pronation issues? I know Raleigh Running Outfitters supposedly can do some stuff, but even they claim they aren't doctors.
I'm fairly certain I've developed a case of chondromalacia most likely related to muscle imbalances in my quads and hamstrings and I'll be going to the doc to check it out and most likely PT from there to fix things. The only thing is I am slightly impatient, and from recent experiences, I've noticed the doctors seem to like to look at one thing at a time, try that, then move to something else if that didn't fix it. Meaning, I'd rather not spend 2 months working on quad/hammy strength imbalances when the real issue could be down at my foot with pronation and it isn't detected until muscle imbalances don't seem to be the issue. 7/1/2008 3:51:41 PM |

Cary Orthopedic failed to correctly diagnose my knee probs... told me I just need to do physical therapy and deal with it.
I knew there was something wrong and eventually went to Duke after a few months of continued pain and they found a cyst and I had arthroscopic surgery to remove it. Duke ftw, they did my dads hip replacement a few years back- he made me go there. 7/1/2008 4:15:35 PM |
