IT SEEMS EVERY YEAR NC COMES OUT WITH MORE TEAMS IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT THAN ANY OTHER STATE......
YOU CAN ALMOST ALWAYS COUNT ON 3 OUT OF THE BIG 4 IN:
DUKE UNC NC STATE WAKE (USUALLY)
THEN YOU HAVE THESE OTHER TEAMS IN THE LESSER CONF. THAT SEEM TO BE IN THERE EVERY YEAR NAMELY:
CHARLOTTE (USUALLY) DAVIDSON UNCW
ON AVERAGE WE HAVE 5 OUT OF THAT 7 IN THE TOURNEY...DOES ANY OTHER STATE EVEN COME CLOSE TO THE AMOUNT OF TEAMS CONSITENTLY IN THE NCAA TOURNEY?? 3/17/2006 12:52:17 PM |

College basketball is big in NC.
But I suspect California to be close. They are just such a huge state and have always had strong sports powerhouses.
I saw a graph in SI one time about NCAA team championships in all sports, and California had more than all other states combined. 3/17/2006 1:01:11 PM |

As far as basketball goes, UCLA still has the record for total championships.
Of course, that's because of Wooden's string, not consistent dominance over the past 50 years.3/17/2006 1:29:09 PM |

Several states are just as prevalent: California and Pennsylvania have 4 teams in and 8 other states have 3 teams in this year.
Ohio: tOSU, MiamiOH, Kent State, Cinn., Xavier, Bowling Green, Wright State, Toledo California: UCLA, Cal, Stanford, USC, UCSB, Fresno St, Pacific, SDSU, Long Beach St Pennsylvania: Pitt, Penn, PennSt, Bucknell, Temple, Drexel, St. Joseph New York: Syracuse, Princeton, St. John, Hofstra, Manhattan, Iona, Albany, Canisius, Colgate
Its simply that you know the smaller schools in NC so you remember when they get in (and what state they are in).

Stanford probably has more to do with that than anything. THeys traight up dominate college athletics top to bottom. Something ridiculous like 85% of their student body is a student-athlete.3/17/2006 2:02:47 PM |
