For a short list
Dean Smith Mike Kryzewski Mike Davis Tyrone Willingham (eh, may not fit. Underacheived, but was given no time) Ron Zook Matt Doherty Bill Gutheridge Steve Lavin Tubby Smith (And he won a national championship!) Dave Odom (rightfully, though...although he's one of the better WF coaches) Frank Solich

take willingham off that
he was fired somewhat out of the blue, the student/alumni were absolutely nowhere near the level of abuse in herb's case
i think willingham is an example of what herb-haters want ncst to be like...there was no acceptance of mediocrity, time is not an issue if you believe progress will be minimal...i think they are different situations though

Well, I've always said basketball and football are different beasts. Football takes a lot more time to win big at traditionally, becuase it requires far more players to be a solid team.
Willingham had some success and was recruiting much better, but they fired him after a unjustly short stay becuase they thought they had Meyer in the bag. He took a lot of heat, though 3/19/2006 12:57:56 PM |

Didn't Duke fans try to fire Vic Bubas early in his career?

not to beat a dead horse in willingham but the recruiting was really bad and then poof immediately was back near the top the year after he was removed 3/19/2006 1:03:00 PM |

I don't think Willingham underachieved. He took a declining program to 10 wins in his first season, and he recuited all the talent they have now. If they had given him more time to work with the program, he might have brought them a 9th title before the end of his career. 3/19/2006 1:04:47 PM |

His first year 11/21 players were 4 stars or better?
Granted, in Notre Dame terms that isn't exceptional, but he was left with no one. I think Willingham could have done pretty well if Quinn would have been matured

add "up till this year bill cowher" as well
that's the thing about all this shit, fans want to run the coach off before he has a chance to do something great for them. and before you say "10 years is plenty of time, any coach should be fired from anywhere if they can't win a the ncaa tournament in that amount of time", you should check how long cowher was head coach before they won.3/19/2006 1:08:47 PM |

you guys really don't get it?
it's not just that he hasn't won a championship. its the symptoms, things he has not addressed, that have lingered for ten years and kept us from winning the big games. he hasn't improved in so many areas, what makes us think he will if he's had ten years already to do so? 3/19/2006 2:32:11 PM |

Moral of the thread: We're all young and can mostly only name recent happenings...and the ones that get press are only at the major schools. I personally only know alot about the ACC, but it happens all over the country: Pro, college, everywhere.
It's not just that NC State fans are crazy. This would be stupid after 2 years or so... but it's been 10. Regardless if you like Herb or not, don't think we're terrible fans becuase we're calling for more success after a decade of him at the helm. Many many other schools have done much much worse 3/19/2006 2:39:41 PM |

^^thank you.
man at the acc tournament, when we were gettin whooped by wake forest, people were so pissed. we'd seen it all before. it was ridiculous and the fans just couldn't take it. screamin, cussin, it was terrible. we stayed, but some people left, and i don't blame them at all. it was hell to watch, and even worse to be there and witness the debacle in person. and some unc fan behind me said "look at all these fairweathers."
i almost lost it. i couldn't believe it. it took a year for them to stop filling the dean dome with doh, and kenan's hardly ever more than half full. yet we've put up with this crap for ten full years and when we just can't bear to watch anymore, we're the fairweather fans?
gah! please stfu a/b us being crappy fans. our administration and herb himself should feel honored to have the fanbase they have.

he has way more talent going into the most successful program of all time and produces garbage every year

^The problem with Tubby is that the fact that he didn't recruit the talent Kentucky had in the 90's with Pitino. Now he finally recruits some all-americans (rondo, morris, crawford, bradley) and he can't seem to coach them up to their potential like a Coach K or Roy Williams. 3/22/2006 8:17:36 AM |

they're kinda past the point of firing him now
which is kind of funny
#1 seeds and SEC championships still wont help him win another crown
yeah, i'd be pissed 3/22/2006 10:35:52 PM |
