I have a Sony k750i (which is like the w800 walkman phone) and all I have to do is get the video to .mp4 format and it plays well. I got a couple episodes of the Sopranos, full Gladiator, and some Family Guy episodes. Needless to say I'm never bored.

Why would you think it takes .mp4? You just said in the same sentence that you didn't even know it supported video. Motorola phones use .3gp files and can be encoded with Quicktime Pro.

The SLVR does use iTunes for mp3s but it doesn't support videos like the iPod video does. The Motorola phone software plays .3gp clips off either the transflash card or the phone's internal memory.

.3gp is a variant of mpeg4 (.mp4) video.

yea I finally got it to work with QT and ffmpeg
Some files i'm unable to trim in quicktime for some reason.
Any reasonable bitrate I should be aiming for, or are there too many variables to look at?
anyone know the difference between using h.263, h.264 and mpeg4 within the 3gp format?

h.263<mpeg4<h.264 (aka mpeg4 AVC)

h.264 also usually takes beefier hardware to decode at full frame rate.
