for the past year i've always gotten those damn credit card application letters usually at least 5-6 week usually from chase of citibank etc. however latly the shit i've been getting has been weird.

today i got a letter from discover card saying my request for a credit card had been declined due to an inability to verify my information. then a few mins ago i got a e-mail from chase (how they got by ncsu e-mail is unknown by me) saying that my chase account is being suspended because my account has been compromised and fradulent activity. I do not have a chase account and never applied for a discover card. hell i avoid at all costs those damned set-ups in the brickyard giving out shit if you sign their form.

do i have anything to worry about?

IF YOU DON'T FORWARD IT TO AT LEAST 10 PEOPLE IN THE NEXT 10 MINS, YOU WILL HAVE BAD LUCK IN LOVE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!

16-20 PEOPLE - YOU'RE CRUSH WILL ASK YOU OUT
11-15 PEOPLE - YOUR CRUSH WILL CALL YOU
6-10 PEOPLE - UR FAMILY WILL DIE

Harvesting email addresses out of a public search engine on a .edu domain isn't that difficult. There's a good reason a lot of corporations don't have an external peoplesearch directory.

As far as the letters go, get a free credit report if you are concerned. You should know which lines of credit you have and the approximate dates you opened each.

The paper letter is a bit concerning. I would definitely get a credit report ASAP to see if someone has been applying for credit cards through your name. It also probably wouldn't hurt to call Discover and ask about. But go through the direct number on the web site, not the one from the letter you got (in case phishing has moved to paper).

yeah, and you may also want to put a freeze on your credit to prevent anyone from applying for credit under your name if you suspect that your identity is being used fraudulently.

I got the same chase e-mail and contacted Chase about it, apparently it's a fraud scheme that leads you to give your information in order "to keep your account from being suspended." Here's the reply e-mail that I got from Chase:

Quote :
"Dear Ryan:

Thank you for contacting us concerning the e-mail
communication you received.

We are aware of this situation. Please be advised that
this email was not sent by the bank, and it links to a
fraudulent website. DO NOT ENTER YOUR USER ID, OR ANY
OTHER PERSONAL INFORMATION ON THIS WEBSITE. DO NOT CLICK
ON THE LINKS, AS THEY MAY CONTAIN A VIRUS.

If you have already entered your information, please
contact us immediately at the number below. We are
available to assist you 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In addition, if you have already clicked on a link, we
recommend that you run an anti-virus program on your
computer.

Please be aware that the bank will never:

* Send an e-mail requiring customers to enter personal
information directly into the e-mail.
* Send an e-mail threatening to close a customer's account
if they do not take immediate action of providing personal
information.
* Send an e-mail requesting a reply including personal
information.
* Send an e-mail asking a customer to enter their User ID,
password or account number(s) into an e-mail or a
non-secure webpage.

If you receive any other e-mail communications supposedly
from the bank that you believe are not valid, you are
welcome to forward them to our attention at

I recently got a similar e-mail regarding BofA to my NCSU account, except I don't have a BofA account so I just deleted it.
