The only time I participated in Service Raleigh was 3 years ago, and we were told that everything started at 8am. I got there at 8am ... and sat around for over half an hour doing nothing. The group leaders were getting the information about our assignments, and breakfast didn't show up until 8:45. Needless to say, I was a bit angry that I got there an extra 45 minutes early, especially considering it would have been nice to have slept in at least a little bit later on a Saturday morning.

I got an email from my group leader yesterday telling me that now I have to be there at 7:45. The official website says it's starting at 8am. Here's my question: is Service Raleigh LEGITIMATELY statring at 8am this year, or should I just show up at 8:30?

I think the whole point of meeting your group on time is so that you can
a) find the group on time before they get lost in that circus
b) familiarize yourself with other team members if you don't know them already
c) get dibs on the t-shirt
d) avoid long breakfast lines
e) enjoy the "entertainment"

If you don't care about any of that, meh, go late as long as you have the group leader's cell phone number so they don't leave for the assignment without you (which they usually don't leave for before 8:30am anyways). Enjoy!

I am one of the site liasons for Service Raleigh, and yes you need to be there prior to 8:00. you should be contacted as to where to meet your group... if you haven't been contacted by Friday morning let me know and I'll find out who's group you in. There are over 1600 volunteers so they do not want people to be out there amid all the confusion not knowing where to go, and you should be leaving for your site way before then so please please please be on time!!!

Get there early if you like standing around listening to a crappy band.

Is there any way to still volunteer if you didn't get to register? I didn't realize that it had come up so quickly, but I really wanted to participate. I sent an e-mail asking the same question, but have heard no reply. Thanks.

I did service raleigh twice while in DeMolay (Young Masons). It was extremely disorganized both times. That was years ago but it was enough for me to never help through them again.

They let us go to work around 8:45. I was afraid it would be more like 9:30.

Of course, the sites were not expecting us until 9:30, so they didn't have stuff ready, and we ended up waiting around at the worksite. Why do you organize it this way? Why was it important to be there by 7:45?

yeah and uncut bagels and 4 tubs of cream cheese with 4 knives was a clever idea for 1500 people. thats why we had to be there 2 hours early.

^call the park scholarship office at 515-3794 and ask who the student leader was for the event. they should be able to point you in the right direction.
