yeah.. you can.. don't do it though
it's ridiculously frustrating because you can't send mail through the imap server, you can only view it

outgoing smtp server: smtp.ncsu.edu use TLS

you can only use smtp if you're on campus - or at least that's how it was when i lived there
haven't given a rat's ass about my ncsu account since...never actually.

actually, you can use authenticated smtp from college inn or anywhere else for that matter.
