looking for some new good runs that start/end on campus, preferably a good 5k, 10k, and 15k run ideally without repeating loops (i.e. do a 15k by just doing 3 loops of a 5k run)

i'm currently running starting at the gym entrance on cates, down cates, rt. on morrill, rt. on the bus path parallel to western, rt. on gorman, rt. on hillsborough st., rt. on pullen and rt. on cates finishing back at gym entrance, switching direction ever now and then but getting bored of the route basically, also anyone know what the length of this route is? i heard between 4 and 5 miles..?

thanks

try this

http://www.usatf.org/routes/search/

seriously, i don't think you're going to need to get it down to the kilometer (kinda anal)...just get your average time for a mile (well, 1600m) on the track and go for a timed run...

I thought that was about a 2-3 miler if I remember correctly. Could be mistaken.

That trick about running 1600m on the track and then running it IRL isnt' really that great for distance running. You'll definitely get slower as you keep running, and a rubberized track isn't quite the terrain you'll get on some of the hilly portions of campus.

Other run routes:

"Gorman Loop". Carmichael Gymnasium up Avent Ferry to Gorman Street. Right on Gorman Street. Follow Gorman Street to Sullivan Ave, and around Cates to the entrance to the gym. I think this is in the high 3s or possibly low 4 mile range. (Been a LONG time since I ran some of these routes).

Lake Johnson--excellent 5-6 mile route. Basically starts at Carmichael and goes to the parking lot at Lake Johnson, then back to Carmichael. For added difficulty (9 mile range or so), hit the trail around the lake and then go back towards Carmichael.

I'm trying to remember all the old fun run routes on NCSU. Been a while!

IMRec used to put out a leaflet with established running routes and distances, but I can't find it anywhere online.

for distances, this is a decent estimator:
http://www.runningmap.com/

and for running routes: centennial is a vastly underused area for runners. It's amazing how much better it is than dealing with Avent Ferry or Western when you don't have to deal with the traffic.

Plot your run on the map *may need a lot of route markers so it follows the bends in the roads

Put in your est. running time, height/weight etc. and it'll estimate the calories burned too.

of course a person will get slower if they're not in condition to run a consistent pace...however, there is no "definite" slowing w/ someone that is well-conditioned...in fact, many elite runners (africans) actually start their training runs at 8 min. mile pace and work down to 5 min. mile pace to give the bodies an adequate "warm-up".

if the hilly/uneven terrain around campus slows a person down that much then it's easy to add more time to a run...

what i was trying to get at is there really is no need to be that specific (5k, 10k, 15k, etc.) out on the roads (unless it's a road race or something like that)...all of my training runs (aerobic capacity training) are done by time because there simply is no need to get a wheel out and measure it off...if a person is so afraid of missing that extra half a mile to mile, then add-on some more time...

i forgot to say that the websites that calculate the distance of certain runs seems to be horizontal distance and not horizontal and vertical distance...thus, especially hilly courses (w/ undulating topography) are going to be short if you're going for a specific distance...the only way (to my knowledge) to get a 100% accurate measurement is to use a wheel...

so i've done the run from campus down avent ferry and around lake johnson dirt/paved and back a few times, only change i made was turning left on trailwood and taking the greenway on the right the rest of the way to lake johnson and on the way back. great run

and yeah, you're right about using time over exact distance to judge how far you've ran, but i'm not quite an elite runner and my pace def. slows down the longer i go, i could get a general idea about how far i've ran but for now it's just easier for me to know how long a route is and keep comparing my times. by some point i should be able to just use time and know pretty close to how far i've ran

any other runs/routes people enjoy? trail running too. guess while on subject anyone know any good 10k/15k/half marathons coming up in or close to raleigh?

oh yeah, running in the rain is awesome! just thought i would add that

add:
oh and the 5k, 10k, 15k distances didn't need to be exact, just was looking for something around that mileage, i.e. i wasn't expecting or looking for a 6.213 mile run, just something around that distance

There are lots of runs that happen on Centennial this time of year... if you're really interested and can't find them (a lot are listed in a popular local runners magazine), try contacting the triathalon professor Alkimenders (or something like that)... she is involved with a lot of that stuff and knows about lots of local events.

^ I apologize... I didn't take the class, my boyfriend did. I was just lazily posting about something I don't know all that much about... Just trying to impart some helpful information, if you don't find it helpful-- then get over it! I'm so sorry I got a few syllables mixed up in the professor's name and added a letter to triathlon...

You might want to check out the Cross Country/Track Club. They're a pretty relaxed group that runs both for fun and for competition. They run various loops ranging from 3 miles to 10+ miles. Send their president a little email, and he might be able to help you out.
