Quote : | "Trojans Make Pitch at Pro Day The scouts knew Reggie Bush was fast, but he impressed with his strength as well.
Two USC stars solidified their status at or near the top of the draft board, but the stock of a third former Trojan took a hit during the school's Pro Day Sunday.
Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush was the main attraction, and he did everything in his power to solidify his hold on the top pick. Bush ran a 4.33 40 ("I thought maybe I could have pushed a 4.29 out of there," Bush told the Tennessean, "but overall I'm pretty happy") and also recorded the top vertical jump (40.5 inches) and broad jump (10 feet, 8.5 inches) of the day.
Perhaps most impressive, however, was Bush's performance at the bench press, where he put up 225 pounds 24 times—better than most of the other Trojans working out for pro scouts.
"He took his shirt off, and I mean, he was huge," teammate Matt Leinart told the Houston Chronicle. "You should have seen the looks on [the scout's] faces. They already know how fast he is. They didn't know he looked like that."
"That was my biggest surprise," Texans coach Gary Kubiak concurred in the Chronicle. "I knew he was what he was. But to bench-press what he did at his size was pretty impressive."
Seeing as Kubiak's Texans hold the first pick, it's clear Bush was impressing the right people.
"There's always that .1 percent chance, but pretty much I figure 99.9. percent I am [the top pick]," Bush told the Chronicle. "I did a pretty good job today. I think I proved to them that I should be the No. 1 pick."
Quarterback Matt Leinart's workout wasn't quite as off-the-charts as Bush, but he did little to hurt his draft-day stock.
"I think I could have done better, but I am happy with what I showed," the Heisman-winning quarterback told the Tennessean. "I think I answered some questions about my arm strength and moving around and throwing and stuff."
Leinart opted not to run the 40 ("They know I am not a running quarterback—I am not a Michael Vick," he told the Tennessean. "The 40-yard dash for me is pointless.") and skipped the bench press, but he posted a 9 foot, 6 inch long jump and a 37-inch vertical. He also completed 36 of 46 passes, though the Tennessean reported that at least four incompletes were drops and several others the result of miscommunication between Leinart and some receivers he hadn't previously thrown to.
Leinart is working out in a closed session for the Titans, who hold the third pick in the draft, on Monday; he also has a private workout scheduled with the Jets, who pick fourth but could trade up to the second spot. Either way, it would be surprising if he isn't the first quarterback off the board on April 29.
The news wasn't as good for running back LenDale White, who cost himself money and possibly tumbled towards the end of the first round or worse by failing to run Sunday. White blamed a right hamstring injury suffered at the Combine six weeks ago for his decision, though he did run some pass patterns for Leinart.
"Sure it hurts him," Texans GM Charlie Casserly told the San Jose Mercury news of White's decision not to run. "How can you draft a running back who doesn't run the 40?"
White, who checked in at six pounds over his college playing weight and by many accounts was not in top shape, also was bested by the smaller Bush—by nine reps—in the bench press competition. LenDale is expected to schedule another workout session once he's healthy, presumably to assure teams considering him with an early pick that he's not damaged goods. However, it may be too late and White may find himself falling behind Laurence Maroney and DeAngelo Williams on draft day." |

Oh man, that would suck...but I doubt it is at that level. TA was ruined from having to play so much as a Freshman from Div I HS football

word is Leinart has "gone Hollywood" and this is bringing him down in the eyes of some scouts...

Everyone tries to knock the top prospects down in some way. Usually the top 3-5 players at the top of the draft are so elite, structured, and refined in skill, ability, and potential that people, scouts, and pro's have to find negatives and pick out the little things that would not matter for late 1st rounder and 2nd rounders...
All I have heard lately is how the stocks of Matt L and Vince Y status dropping...c'mon lets be real...they are not dropping at all...

what is the word on the texans current back, davis. Are they planning on keeping him, or using him as trade bait?
If they don't improve their o-line more, it won't matter what back they have. 4/4/2006 2:59:07 PM |

Last I heard, they were keeping him with no intentions of trading. Yeah that is a redundant sentence
