Just about 50% of the .wmv files i download now do not play correctly. I've played them in windows media player, Media player classic, power dvd, ultra player, DIVX Player and "the "playa" They all give the same results. Only Winamp plays the files with no flaws. This also happens fairly often with .wmv files that i have created myself from mpg files
They usually look something like this.
The thumbnail folder view of the file shows up normally if that means anything. It would seem to me that would indicate that windows "knows" how to decode the file, but when the player is started, it goes batshit 4/8/2006 10:19:23 PM |

if you have an ati card, go into the ati options and make sure wmv hardware acceleration is off. 4/9/2006 12:05:15 AM |

In Windows Media Player. Go to Tools > Options.
Go to the Performance Tab.
At the bottom there is a slider for video acceleration. Bring it down to none. If it grayed out, hit restore defaults, then move it. 4/10/2006 12:33:54 AM |

Your drivers for your ATI card dont get along with WMP's hardware acceleration interface for the particular codec you are using. Thus disabling it and only using the processor to render the video results in the expected image
You may want to try new drivers, that may fix it. 4/10/2006 6:12:00 PM |

yea. I had this same problem with my ATI card and it drove me nuts.
I finally found the option in the ati drivers to disable wmv acceleration and that fixed it.
At the time i was using the ati drivers that put the options into the advanced display panel. I believe the option was under the ati advanced options.
Now days they use this god awful thing thats called the catalyst control center. The option is now located in video -> show all options -> windows media acceleration. or something like that.
I noticed mine was checked and im not having any issues, so they may have fixed it in these newer drivers. 4/10/2006 6:33:56 PM |
