Just went from a 9800XT to a 7800GS and I'm having a weird problem.... figured one of you guys might have an idea whats up.
Really my problem is only with Oblivion, but no one else seems to be having this problem on their forums so I assume it is my system. When the game loads, the title screen where it says "Bethesda" chops along like my system is struggling. The video stutters and so does the sound. The same thing happens with the intro movie.
Once I'm in the game, however, I can run the game at 1280X1024 with 4x AA and max settings. So the card is performing well once I'm in the game, so I have no idea what might be causing the problem.
I have uninstalled the drivers, ran a driver cleaner for all ATI and NVIDIA drivers, but no dice.
Any ideas? 4/9/2006 9:18:16 PM |

Not really...my machine is like that with Black and White 2. I can only assume your harddrive is slow, or you have little free system memory. 4/9/2006 9:56:44 PM |

Those intro videos are normally proprietary divx movies. See if you have any problems with divix or quicktime or anything like that. It is a pretty odd problem. 4/10/2006 6:41:50 PM |

Are you buying new cards every month or so? Or am I getting you confused with other people? 4/10/2006 9:13:23 PM |

also note that while those intro videos are playing, its actually loading the menu in the background. So it may actually be a disk issue or something else. How are load times when in game? 4/10/2006 9:26:42 PM |

i wonder if it's a copy protection software issue. 4/10/2006 9:56:25 PM |

Never even thought about a disk issue.... but I mean that would have caused it to happen with the old 9800XT.....
and yes, its a retail copy of oblivion 4/11/2006 7:42:32 PM |

ive got no idea what kind of garbage they're using for copy protection nowadays, but it would be perfectly reasonable to think that the installed software could be rigged so as not to work.
i dont know this game either, so i have no clue what kind of shit you will lose if you try re-installing the whole thing
