These are great pets, y'all. I've got guinea pigs right now, so I'm not going to take on any of these guys, but I had one once who was perfectly at home in a 15 gallon tank with a wheel. If I put my hand in the cage he'd crawl into it and sit and I'd pick him up and let him run around on my bed. If he was out of food he'd hop vertically all down the length of his cage to get my attention.

they're happier and live longer in pairs. i had 2 gerbils that lived to be 3 or 4, whereas the third sibling that someone else got died in 1.

amazon, there are significant difference between gerbils and hamsters.

I think hamsters prefer to be on their own while gerbils become depressed on their own and should be kept in groups.

^^Gerbils are VASTLY different. How about not giving advice to something you know nothing about? Gerbils are social creatures, hamsters are solitary. If the hamsters get territorial or just pissed off, THEY WILL KILL the other. The only time this doesn't usually happen is with a mated pair, but then you gotta worry about constant babies.

^^^ok chill out. i was thinking about most other rodents.. gerbils, rats, mice, ferrets. kinda easy to bunch hampsters in with them.

dwarf hamsters can live together without any problems....it's the bigger teddy bear hamsters that will eat each other if you put them in a cage together - they're the ones that like to be alone

My bro had a pair that had a few litters and none of the subsequent kids ever had problems being caged together (same sex cages of course).

That said, are there any left? *debating one, has a fish tank she couldl easily convert*
I've owned one before just not in a looong time.

^^Yeah, that's what most of the hamster books say. My friend and I have both kept dwarfs though and had problems with pairs. Guess it just depends on the pair.

they're all still here guys. im going home for break but feel free to call on monday. dwarf hamster are actually better suited living in groups because they're more sociable than the regular hamsters. they're really easy and cheap to take care of too ( 5 bucks for bag of food and another $4 for bedding will last you a good 2-3 months). The babies rarely bite, and when they do, they nibble first so you'll know. but call because im running out of room for all of them
