1. Jay Wright - Vilanova. According to WGHP (as per Pack Pride poster) He has expressed interest in NC State. Do our disadvantage, Wright just recently had his contract extended until the 2012-2013 season. (http://villanova.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/021406aab.html). In any case, there is no reason to believe he would accept this job.

2. Tubby Smith - Kentucky. According to Pat Forde of espn.com, Tubby Smith is looking to leave Kentucky. (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=forde_pat&id=2405333). Once again, it appears that Tubby is already making 2.5 million and has a track record of Beamering schools. The only way Tubby would seriously be looking for a new job is if Kentucky is forcing him out. It doesn't appear this is true.

3. Billy Gillespie - Texas A&M. An up and coming coach, put the Aggies in the NCAA tournament for the first time since the 1970s. He runs a slow down offense. As of now, I am not entirely sure of his current contract agreement. Billy is a Texas guy and extremely popular at TAMU. Like UT, TAMU has deep pockets. NC State should not be looking to outbid TAMU.

4. Mark Turgeon - Wichita State. Another up and coming star within the ranks of College Basketball. Turgeon's Shockers managed to defeat UNC in order to advance in this years NCAA tournament. To our disadvantage, Turgeon has recently signed a contract extension through 2016.

5. Gregg Marshall - Winthrop. Marshall in 8 years at Wintrop as lead the Eagles to 6 NCAA tournament appearances. He is another up and coming coaching star. Admittedly, I am not aquainted with Winthrop or Marshall.

6. Steve Lavin - ex UCLA. Lavin while at UCLA took his team to 7(?) straight sweet sixteens. Lavin until this year was still receiving money from UCLA in a contract buy out. Lavin has publically stated he is happy with his job at ESPN and has a contract through 2010.

7. John Brady - LSU. Brady has openly stated that he is currently upset with his $750,000 contract. He could be open to overtures from NC State, but it could be another beamering. State fans should not be considering Brady at this moment. Not known as a recruiter, Brady has mixed success and has had only one good year (this year). Do not look for Fowler searching after Brady. Likewise, Brady is a divisive coach, at this time, NC State needs a coach to unite the fan base.

lavin recruited well @ UCLA, but the again, that was UCLA. i dont know how much actual "recruiting" you would have to do to get a kid to go there, kinda like Duke or UNC. he had some mild success, but was forced out there too.

Call Wright. Ask him if there's any hope.

If not... go with Turgeon, Gillespie, and Marshall... in that order

(And I'm having a hard time deciding between Turgeon or Gillespie)

I said in the beginning I'd be happy with Gillespie. Most people think Turgeon is a brilliant coach... but I have my doubts. Marshall in worst case scenario, although I think he could have a huge upside

It's "Gillispie," for the record. Not how the name is usually spelled, but whatever...

And who am I kidding, some people couldn't spell Sendek after 10 years.

You know...I've thought about Steve Lavin too.

However, look at what Howland has done at UCLA in little time. I know Lavin got to all of these sweet 16's....but UCLA is like UNC, they recruit themselves. My grandma could get enough good players to go to UCLA to make the sweet 16.

In other words....Lavin is a good sportscaster and he should stick to it.

Hmm. I had a friend growing up that spelled it "Gillespie"... hence why I spelled it that way.

i think marshall would be a risk, but i also agree he has a huge upside. he has done some pretty special things at winthrop and even though he is always a 16 or 15 seed, always seems to give the big boys a good game. i know charlotte backed out of a game with them this year

Yeah, Billy spells it unusually.

Going on the assumption that Wright is a "no," Turgeon would be my pick.

What kind of offense does Turgeon run?

I don't know that much about him other than this season.... but I've heard his name thrown around for years now. I know he's considered one of the "high potential" mid major coaches.

I don't know if I'm willing to throw him into the ACC considering he's never been in a competitive conference (Well, the MVC looked good this year, but you know what I mean)

They beat Seton Hall and Tennessee before losing to George Mason. I think with his contract extension though, he is no longer much of a candidate.

Don't want Tubby or Brady, I would be pleased if Gillispie came, don't know much about Marshall but I hope this situation isn't bad enough that we're reaching into the Big South for a coach.

I want Pitino, but Gillispie will do.

I can't imagine Turgeon has a contract extension big enough to where we couldn't afford it. (Considering how small the school / athletic program is)

though he doesn't have the coaching experience... Whitt should at least get a courtesy call. I'm sure our fanbase would unite with him as our coach, despite his lack of experience.

id go for turgeon, larranaga, and marshall, in that order.

We are proper fucked right now. We're going to end up with a shitty coach like Brady.

tubby went to my high school! - (hoke pride!)

do we really want gillispie? i thought the majority of people were looking for a "fast paced" type of coach, as they compare the styles of duke and unc. nutsmackr states gillispie runs a slow style offense. my guess is that unless we start making serious strides vs. in state rivals, people will start looking to oust him like herb, stating "hes too much like the last guy."

Gillispie is more like a drill sergeant than an intellectual. Yes he runs a slow style of offense, but it's completely different. It's not heavily reliant on the 3 like we were under Herb. But Texas A&M's defense this year was terrific and makes me happy about him possibly coming here.

GILLISPIE RAN A FAST-PACED OFFENSE AT UTEP!!!

When Gillispie has had the players, he's shown that he will run.

HE TOOK OVER A TEAM THAT WENT 0-16 IN BIG-12 PLAY AND MADE THEM 8-8.

I doubt he had the talent to run with everyone so he used a grind it out style of play and pulled out some wins.

I've been thinking about that as well... I haven't gotten to see his team play at all this year really. His 60 point games wouldn't sit well with a lot of fans.

We better offer him next, or I'm going to kill Lee Fowler.

If we end up in another situation like Barnes and Cal put us in, I'm probably going to throw a brick at Fowler next time I see him at a basketball game.
