didnt wanna bump my last thread cuz it needed an update...

my first car was a 95 taurus (not my choice) and the tranny died at 77,000 miles. This was partly because cuz my mom drove it before me.
I am tryin to get a used car under 4 grand and skeptical about getting another ford or any other american car for that matter
What model and make should i get for this amount of money???
Also, if i buy something like a volkswagen or volvo, would they be more expense to repair compared to a domestic or jap car?

depends on what vw or volvo you get... the parts for older ones (vws at least) are pretty damn cheap and plentiful...

relatively cheap parts... there are plenty of those cars around and the parts are available at any place that has an account with worldpac

the 2.0 engine is sluggish but stout.. it'll last a long time if you take decent care of it...

if you can get a jetta of those years you mentioned w/ TDi (turbodiesel) it'll last a LONG time unless you really fuck up.. and you'll get excellent fuel efficiency

my '97 taurus has had too many issues with it (although it survived my first and only wreck quite well, and I got it from my dad who had a deer hit it) so I would probally not get another ford if I didn't absolutely have to after my experiances with the transmission ('97 is nearly past dying, so my dad is getting a new car and I'll get his '01 taurus).
yay for you getting rid of your taurus though! I'd probally go with a honda.

I was not satisfied with my 98 Jetta. It was too slow. I had an 85 Jetta that I liked much better since it was lighter. They just added more weight to the 98, but did not increase the hp enough to keep up. Also IMHO VW parts are too expensive. I had three power window regulators go out in two years in addition to some other stuff. Also, don't buy from or take your car to Southern States. Their service was the worst, but at the time I had a warrentee and no other choice.

If I take care of it, do you think the part cost and the amount of times I have to replace the parts even out?

Also, what do you people think of another American car such as a chevy or chystler (including poniac, dodge, etc)?

They're all good.

'98 is the first year for timing chain, I believe.

My sister had a '95 until very recently. Some shitbag ran a red light and t-boned her. I had just done about 800 dolla worth of work to the car (all preventative maintenance/AC work), and it ran flawlessly. I was fucking PISSED. Car had over 150k on it and ran like a dream.

Hyundai has improved a lot, but in my opinion they are still borderline shit-hunk material.

Here's my car policy; I would drive almost anything European (from 60s Citroens to 70s Renaults to any Benz or BMW and so on), but you wouldn't catch me in anything American after 71 or so if it's not a race car, C5/C6, or if you twist my arm enough maybe a Viper. But when it comes to Korean, I have a strict "no thank you" policy unless I suppose it's a brand new-ish Hyndai...
