The 6-foot-11 McRoberts is Duke's only ACC-caliber big man after the graduation of All-American Shelden Williams and the transfer of Eric Boateng. You say freshman Brian Zoubek? I say he's a project. We'll see. If McRoberts turns pro, Duke would plummet out of the preseason Top 25 and perhaps into the 2007 NIT. I'm serious. Expect Coach K to convince McRoberts that, for the sake of their relationship, Josh really should return to Duke even if it does cost him 10-15 spots in the draft from 2006 to 2007. North Carolina State fans got what they wanted. The media covering N.C. State got what it wanted. Herb Sendek is gone, and now, I'm going to get what I've wanted:
Vindication for Herb Sendek.
Here's how it's going to happen. With Sendek gone to Arizona State, unless N.C. State can pull a Rick Barnes out of its hat, Wolfpack basketball will go down the toilet. Maybe then -- only then, apparently -- will the unrealistic N.C. State fan base and juvenile N.C. State media understand what they had in Sendek.
They didn't have a comedian. They didn't have a motivational speaker. They didn't have a guy who was going to win over media by filling their notepads with one-liners, or win over fans by making snide comments about Duke or North Carolina.
They had a great basketball coach. That's what they had. Maybe that's all they had, but that should have been enough. They had a guy who needed a few years to hit his stride in the ACC, as a recruiter and as a tactician, but who had absolutely hit that stride in recent years. They had a guy who went to five straight NCAA Tournaments, a streak at N.C. State that had been accomplished only by ethically challenged Jim Valvano, and Sendek was going to lead the Wolfpack to a school-record sixth straight NCAA Tournament in 2007. No question.
But now, after being made so miserable at N.C. State that he jumped to Arizona State, Sendek is gone. And soon, if there is a God in that Carolina blue heaven, Wolfpack basketball will follow.
Forget what you hear about N.C. State basketball being a great job. It's not. It would be a great job if it weren't for Duke and North Carolina. But Duke and North Carolina are rolling along, and the kinds of players who can beat Duke and North Carolina are instead going to Duke and North Carolina. Which means N.C. State -- even with that nice arena, that great conference affiliation, those two national championships and that passionate fan base -- is not a great job.
And actually, the passionate fan base is part of the problem. Who wants the N.C. State job now? Coaches around the country are talking about what happened to Sendek, and their position is pretty unanimous: Wolfpack fans should be ashamed. In a day and age where coaches outright cheat or clandestinely cut so many corners that emergency ethics meetings are called, Sendek was honorable. For a guy as smart as he was, he was too dumb to cheat, too naïve to know that you almost can't win at a place like N.C. State without looking the other way. But he was such a good coach, he won in spite of himself.
Around the country, coaches know. Sendek was treated shabbily by Wolfpack nation -- by sniping fans, reader-pandering media and an administration that never once stood up and said ENOUGH! -- and all Sendek did was go to five straight NCAA Tournaments despite the presence of Mike Krzyzewski, Roy Williams and Skip Prosser in his own state, and Gary Williams and Paul Hewitt and Al Skinner elsewhere in his league.
Someone will take this job. Wolfpack fans had better hope that someone is Barnes, who has always wanted to return to his home state and who knows the only ACC job he'll ever get there is in Raleigh. But Barnes has it rolling so good at Texas, why would he leave for N.C. State? That's a question only he and his family can answer.
If Barnes says no, the Wolfpack's options will be limited. For some reason Frank Haith of Miami seems to be a candidate. Haith gets credited for being a great recruiter when he worked for Barnes at Texas. Funny, no one talked about Haith's recruiting genius when he was with Dave Odom at Wake Forest. And has anyone asked why Miami, with a good center and a three-guard lineup to match almost any in America, couldn't capitalize on a down year for the ACC this season? Who cares. Let's hire him! ESPN says he'd be good!
N.C. State athletics director Lee Fowler is a smart basketball guy. He's a former coach, a former head of the NCAA Tournament selection committee. A guy like Fowler seems smart enough to recognize the genius down the road at Charlotte, Bobby Lutz, who rose above his mid-level job in Conference USA to reach five NCAA Tournaments in seven years and win as many as he lost against the biggest names in the league: Bob Huggins, Rick Pitino and John Calipari. Wolfpack fans probably wouldn't embrace the homespun Lutz, but Wolfpack fans didn't embrace the intellectual Sendek, either. Fowler can't let Wolfpack fans make this hire, like he let Wolfpack fans run his last coach out of town.
This is a dangerous time for Wolfpack basketball. Dangerous. Already two recruits, including likely 2007 McDonald's All-American point guard Chris Wright, have backed off their commitments. The fan base is unreasonable. The Raleigh media is laughable.
A word about the media, many of whom I know, and who know me: You are what you are. What are you? You're the dog being wagged by the tail. You're columnists saying Sendek and N.C. State aren't right for each other, when what you really mean is, Sendek and the N.C. State media aren't right for each other. You're reporters skulking around the 2001 ACC Tournament, when N.C. State was getting destroyed in a quarterfinal by eventual national champion Duke, asking Wolfpack boosters if they'd be interested in buying out Sendek's contract, turning fiction into news.
You know who you are. And Sendek knows who he is -- someone who's too good for N.C. State basketball. Unless something radical changes among the Wolfpack fan base and those who would fan its flames, most star coaches are too good for N.C. State basketball.
Don't be mad at me, Wolfpack fans. Be happy. You got what you wanted. Sendek's gone.
Now live with the consequences. " |

Quote : | "Right now, these are the 10 most important players in college basketball. All 10 are underclassmen who are considering turning pro via the NBA Draft. If they do, the consequences will be dire for the college program they leave behind.
Ten for Tuesday is nothing if not negative.
Duke an NIT team? Without McRoberts it just may be. (Getty Images) Duke an NIT team? Without McRoberts it just may be. (Getty Images) 1. Josh McRoberts, Duke: Most important player on this list. The 6-foot-11 McRoberts is Duke's only ACC-caliber big man after the graduation of All-American Shelden Williams and the transfer of Eric Boateng. You say freshman Brian Zoubek? I say he's a project. I'm serious about that, too. Big fan of Coach K? No, I'm not. And about that, I'm deathly serious.
2. Kyle Lowry, Villanova: Allan Ray and Randy Foye are gone, but there are enough pieces left for Villanova to stay in the top half of the brutal Big East, which means a likely spot in the Top 25 and a definite bid to the 2007 NCAA Tournament. Without Lowry? Look, Mike Nardi is a great third or fourth guard, but if he's your lead guard ... you're in trouble. Lowry's decision will make or break Villanova next season. Which doesn't change the fact that Jay Wright looks like Antonio Banderas.
3. Leon Powe, Cal: Cal's not a one-man team, but it's close. And here's the one man. With his history of knee problems and the thin draft pool this year, Powe should turn pro. Assuming Powe reads Ten for Tuesday religiously and is preparing his NBA application this very second, the Bears are going to drop back into the Pac-10 pack next season. That means Ben Braun goes back to life on the coaching bubble. I happen to like Braun, but that's just the way it is. We're all about truth, justice and chocolate ice cream here at Ten for Tuesday.
4. Jordan Farmar, UCLA: The Bruins will be an NCAA Tournament team next season even if he does turn pro, but Farmar would be the difference between just another NCAA Tournament team ... and another run to the Final Four. Darren Collison is better than most people realize, but he's a change-of-pace guard who's best suited, for now, in a complementary role. If Farmar goes pro, Collison becomes a 35-minute player. UCLA would be in good hands, but not great hands. As for you, sophomore Arron Afflalo, what are you thinking? Don't enter the draft. Use your free pass next year, when you might have a shot at the first round. Now? No shot. Is that clear enough? None. Zero.
5. Shannon Brown, Michigan State: Since I'm all about patting myself on the back, let me remind you that last season I thought Michigan State was a borderline Top 25 team. I was right. You were wrong. Does that earn me credibility to say this? Probably not in your eyes but here goes: If Brown turns pro, Michigan State won't make it into the 2007 NCAA Tournament. And there's no borderline there. With Brown, the Spartans are (probably) an NCAA tourney team. Without him? Definite NIT material. MSU fans, it is what it is ... not what you want it to be.
6. Ronnie Brewer, Arkansas: Tactically speaking, Stan Heath doesn't do much for me. He's in fine company, considering Final Four coach John Brady of LSU and ex-Michigan national champ Steve Fisher of San Diego State don't do much for me, either. Having said that, Ronnie Brewer is the brains behind Arkansas basketball, and if he turns pro, Arkansas will become the most talented mid-level SEC team you've ever seen -- and Heath will be looking for an opening in the MAC.
7. Nick Fazekas, Nevada: The Wolf Pack has talent, but there's only one Fazekas, and if he leaves ... the WAC just got real interesting. With a horde of talented transfers set to become eligible in 2006-07, New Mexico State is poised to unseat Nevada, even if Fazekas returns. If Fazekas stays in the draft, New Mexico State will pass the Wolf Pack in a league where a second NCAA Tournament bid is no given.
8. Alexander Johnson, FSU: Florida State would be very good -- and only a notch or two below great -- if Johnson returns. He's a dominant center in a league losing some of its best big men (Craig Smith, Shelden Williams, Eric Williams, possibly Cedric Simmons and McRoberts). With Johnson, FSU is a no-brainer NCAA Tournament team in 2007, possibly a Sweet 16 contender. Without him, the Seminoles will slog into late February as they do every year, on the wrong side of the NCAA bubble.
9. Quincy Douby, Rutgers: With Douby, Rutgers has a chance to make the NCAA Tournament in Fred Hill's first year. And if that happens, watch out. Hill is a monster recruiter, New Jersey is loaded with talent, and a splashy debut season would set up Rutgers as a Big East heavyweight for years to come. However, if Douby goes pro and Rutgers falters, recruits (and fans) might start thinking, "Here we go again" -- and once hope is gone, so is the future. Ooh ... that was deep.
10. Will Blalock, Iowa State: The Cyclones won't be very good next year, regardless of what Blalock does. But "very good" isn't the goal -- respectability is. With point guard Blalock leading a decent cast of big men and wings, Iowa State would be respectable in Greg McDermott's first year, building crucial momentum for the future. This assumes a few things, however. One, Iowa State's other junior NBA hopeful, Curtis Stinson, is definitely not returning. And, two, Blalock is more receptive to the coaching of McDermott than he was to Wayne Morgan" |

Updated: Apr/19/2006 09:26 AM Stop swinging for the fences Mr. Fowler
Once upon a time Lee Fowler was a sympathetic figure. Fowler is the athletics director at North Carolina State, and while he didn't help keep coach Herb Sendek by telling his idiot fan base to sit down and shut up, he didn't exactly chase Sendek out of town, either. That's what Wolfpack fans did, chasing their coach all the way to Arizona State despite five straight NCAA Tournament appearances in Raleigh.
So Fowler was someone to be pitied. He was even more pitiable as he kept swinging for home runs and landing on his rear end. Rick Barnes and John Calipari turned down huge raises from the Wolfpack to accept smaller raises from Texas and Memphis. Poor Lee Fowler. Poor guy.
That was then.
Now?
Fowler's a clown.
Fowler is careening around college basketball, looking for someone -- anyone -- with enough name recognition to take this job. Fowler's goal isn't to win games next February. His goal is to win the press conference next week. Not good, Lee. Not good at all.
If the reports are right -- and when it comes to leaky N.C. State, the reports are usually right -- Fowler has made inquiries into LSU's John Brady, Texas A&M's Billy Gillispie and Wisconsin's Bo Ryan. None would fit at N.C. State. Or even close. But what the heck. N.C. State fans have heard of Bo Ryan! Hire him!
Look, Lee. Stop trying to hit a home run. N.C. State doesn't have that kind of power, and by now, you should know it.
Go for a guy from a smaller conference, preferably someone who doesn't have one of the best jobs in his conference and yet manages to win every year anyway. That is what will face N.C. State's next coach. So find someone who fits the profile. A working knowledge of the state of North Carolina would help, too. Find someone who has both of those, Fowler, and you've got your next coach.
Or you could give Mike Krzyzewski and Lute Olson a call. Surely one of them would say yes. This is, after all, N.C. State" |

My illusions of attracting a dream coach? What illusions would those be... Where did you see me going nuts over Barnes? I certainly never went nuts over Calipari... I would support hiring Kruger because he has a good resume. I'd love to get Lutz or Gillespie and Id be satisfied with Haith. I dont think these are illusions...
I dont understand why we'll do significantly worse. Are we a sweet 16 team without Cedric? Probably not. We weren't going to get there under Herb either.
Losing Herb is going to hurt us temporarily in recruiting it looks like but who cares. If there is anything Herb proved in ten years its that he can't do a damn thing with his recruits.
There are some coaches who overachieve with nothing (look at Roy this year) and some coaches that will underachieve no matter how much talent they have (Herb in the last two seasons)..4/19/2006 5:42:33 PM |

Yes because UNCC and NC State are totally similar programs.
He held his own against better competition and he's proven to be a strong recruiter. (NBA talent at Pfeiffer and NBA talent & elite recruits at UNCC).
He also made the Final Four in the early 90s
And he's not a nerd like Sendek, he's not the type of person that would eat alone at Case.

By the way, Lutz is a high-talker. We already have Amato. He made it to the Final Four of NAIA. Nice try. I live like 3 miles from Pfeiffer. He used to go to my home church.
