regarding thunderbird,

do you have to specify and outgoing mail server?

i am always concerned about that

i dont think i have one, because i'm using someone else's ISP connection

well, yeah, you always have to - if you're going to send mail, at least. if you're only receiving mail, you don't have to

there are free smtp servers out there, though.

you do not need an SMTP server to send to the internet.

your mail client should be smart enough to find the correct mail host vix MX records and send it directly to the other end.

The only reasons you would ever need to go thru another SMTP server before it hits the end are:
a) for some reason you cant do mx lookups
b) you need to do server side conversion or filtering.

Open smtp servers are the reason spam exists
