I have an aquarium type box for them, put some rocks in there for now, and a little water and a small stick. They seem pretty content. Also, what to feed such tiny turtles?

This is two small turtles about an inch and a half in diameter.

if they are carnivorous turtles, you can also feed them pinky mice

if not, like yellow-bellied sliders, feed them these pellets called turtle brittle

Yeah, most pet stores have turtle pellets, but it'll depend on what you need if they are turtles or tortoises. FYI its illegal in most states to own turtles under a certain size, and in NC it's illegal to purchase/sell them. Oh...and they spread salmonella.

I'll go get some turtle brittle after class. I do believe these are yellow bellied sliders. Now, what should I put in their habitat? I have a small pool on one side and rocks and a stick on the other. One turtle is in the water and the other is on the rocks right now, so I guess they like it. Any suggestions on how deep the water should be, if it should be kinda dirty like pond water, or anything else would be greatly appreciated.

These turtles tend to make an absolute mess of their water, being little guys it shouldn't be too much of a problem for now. They are extremely slow growers when they are babies, don't expect them to get bigger any time soon. As for the salmonella thing, just wash your hands after holding them and you'll be fine. That whole thing was blown out of proportion by state officials so they could outlaw the sale of turtles, at least in NC. You should have a basking spot for them somewhere, and you'll probably want to put a reptile light in a clamp lamp over by where the rocks are, with a 50 or 60 watt bulb. Turn it on and off when you wake up. I also suggest going to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences dowtown and seeing what the turtle habitats look like there. For several years I was a volunteer and helped maintain their turtles.

Don't just get any lightbulb. At Petsmart, there are special lightbulbs for reptiles. You'll need two different lightbulbs. One UV bulb for the day and one night light for heat which is usually either red or blue. Make sure that the rock area is large enough that they can completely dry themselves. There are food pellets for turtles along with freeze dried worms. It depends on the size of the tank, but there should be enough water for them to be totally submerged. I got this chlorine neutralizer for the water and eye drops for their eyes. I'm not really sure how often you should clean the tank, but I don't think it should be pond water dirty. Good luck!

we got them out of a pond at 10:00 at night. 60 degree temperatures. Why would we need a heat lamp on them at night. It is normally around 70 degrees in my house.

You should also get a water filter for them...they will mess up the water in a matter of days. Stagnant water is horrible for them, it gets so gross. You can get a good filter for about $30 at pet-smart that can be completely submerged in water (mines called "the shark" or something like that). They have them running in the tanks with the little crabs if you want to see one in action before you buy it. Then when the water isn't flowing as well as it was origionally, you can just take the filter out, rinse it and put it back in.

I got them some floating turtle food or something like that, they dont seem to want to eat it. And they keep moving their rocks around-not that that really matters, I just move them back- but they seem to like water on one side and rocks on the other. I'm gonna get them a glass reptile bowl when I go home tomorrow. I think my mom has one, and their plastic house just ain't cuttin it.

I think you need to go to the store and get a turtle book. It'll give you LOTS of information.
Generally all/most reptiles need a heatlamp because they're cold blooded and letting them chill down will really stress them out.

and don't stick pond water in there! Just use tap and use some water conditioner. Petsmart is your friend

ive had lots of turtles in my day, and painted turtles (which you probably have) will really make a mess and stink up a place in no time.

oh and i disagree w/ the heat thing as well. they hibernate all winter long in the cold ass pond/lake. theyll be fine in room temp water. if you make it too warm itll just accelerate bacteria and algea growth and make more of a mess

about eight years ago, my uncle was taking care of this pyscho kid.....well, we didnt he was pyscho(been abused by his dad and was in an out of mental hospitals) and we invited the uncle to visit...he brought the kid with him....next thing we knew, my sister comes screaming from downstairs...the pyscho kid put her kids pet turtle on the burner....my sister had gone downstairs to check on her baby(who was taking a nap) and saw the turtle roasting.

ive had a slider for 19 years, and we keep him in a baby pool with a couple rocks during spring and summer

but during the winter and fall, keep it in a aquarium with pinestraw or something so they can hibernate. cover it with a towel too
