This morning I was exiting onto Capital Blvd and all of a sudden there was water and steam shooting out from under my hood leaving a nice white cloud behind the car. The first few split seconds I was like "what the... where the hell is this water coming from?" I didnt hear anything break and everything still worked fine so I continued the last half mile to work. I popped the hood and saw that the radiator broke where the hose attaches up at the top... DAMN WHY CANT THEY MAKE THESE THINGS OUT OF METAL!?

Should I just get a new one or try my luck with something out of a junkyard?

I literally meant why couldnt they have made mine metal. So for $300 I could have one that will last forever but a new unit from Lake Shore Radiator is $120. I think that sounds about right.

So does Lake Shore, and they have the best prices around. That's where the last one I got came from. The one before that came from Performance Radiator. And I've gotten several from Carquest and Advance.

I shop around locally, simply because there are places around here that are VERY competitive with any place online, especially once you add in shipping. And you can usually have it the same day. Why order online?

As for used? Fuck all that noise. Used radiators are like a box of chawklets...ya nevah know whut ya gawna get.

^^oh, and Callahan...eat my dong, bitch. You HAVE to love the Teggies!

haha, teggies unite!!1

I picked up my radiator this afternoon, will install lunchtime tomorow (car is still at work.)

While I was at Lake Shore I inquired about a new a/c compressor ($216) since the clutch on mine decided to vibrate loose and violently eject itself one day many months ago. In fact it happened very close to work in the morning...

OK I got the new radiator in, flushed the system with water, and refilled with coolant.

I drove down the street to get something to eat and about a half mile down the road the temp needle is almost all the way at H, so I pull over, kill the engine, and crank the heat. I drove to the store and back to work and the needle stayed at about 3/4 the way to H as long as I drove gingerly.

Obviously theres something wrong... Could running it without coolant the other morning have messed up the thermostat? Er... This is my first experience with cooling systems. Any ideas?

By bleed do you mean did I let it run a bit after initially putting in coolant, then fill it back up to the top? I did that...

There should be a nipple somewhere(mine's near the upper radiator hose on the engine side) that you can loosen, I believe you keep the radiator cap off, run the engine, loosen that bolt, then watch the nipple until its a stream and no air bubbles appear while keeping the radiator level to the top, then tighten the nipple.

Actually, reading my service manual, it says that you are supposed to loosen the bleed bolt nipple THEN fill up the radiator with fluid, and tighten it as soon as its a steady stream without bubbles.

Yeah, his 'stat was fucked. It appeared to be the original one, and the piston assembly/rod had actually broken loose and cocked in the hole.

One new stat and gasket. I haven't heard from dustm, so I'm presuming he made it home okay.

And no, we didn't need to bleed. The hose position takes care of that by itself.

hah that sucks dude

happened to me twice though, on two different engines (my car is now on its third engine). buy a new radiator for ~$100, throw it in and be done with it. it will last at least as long as you'll have the car, no need for an all-aluminum one. nevermind i should read the thread
