Kramden Institute, Inc., is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit charitable institution whose mission is to locate, repair, and refurbish older computers to donate to kids who work hard in school, but cannot afford home computers. Secondary missions include encouraging the recycling and reuse of computer hardware by extending the useful life of computers, and developing educational programs to study computer recycling and the impact of bringing a computer into a less-advantaged home.

I participated in Geek-A-Thon #3, it was a no-brainer kind of day and we were able to get 75 donated computers out to kids that needed them. Sign up and help out some kids from the Triangle.
If you can put a CD in a drive and click the "next" button you know enough to help out. Basically the refurbishment process was a new install of Win 98se (licensed copies from MS), and installing a programs package (Open Office, Ad-aware, etc) on the machine. Check the modem and Lan connection and the computer is good to go. There are replacement parts for those machines that need a new CD drive/Hard drive/RAM/NIC/etc. If you don't know how to do something there are plenty of people who will help you out.
If you can't volunteer to help out, donate some of your old equiment that's sitting around collecting dust. 4/25/2006 12:24:43 AM |
