The car is a '66 mustang coupe, which already has an aftermarket stereo in it that I did a couple years ago. Right now I have:
A premiere 500w head unit Two older alpine 6x9s in the package tray Two 6 1/2 pioneers in the kickpanels The front dash speaker that was in there when I got the car, helps out the kicks
Plans (and questions): http://www.crutchfield.com/S-bzGcCXCuxvk/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?I=500SPR69LP Alpine Type-R SPR-69LP 6x9"s for the rear http://www.crutchfield.com/S-bzGcCXCuxvk/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?I=500SPR17LS Alpine Type-R SPR-17LS for the front... larger speakers will go in the kickpanels, tweeters will go in the door where the window crank was, like this guy's:
... now as I understand it the front speakers are component speakers, while the rear 6x9"s aren't. As opposed to putting in those rear speakers, should I just put in some other sort of component speakers, and if so what type? I'm also planning one or two 10" subs (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-bzGcCXCuxvk/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?I=500SWR1042Alpine Type-R SWR-1042D)... would that sustitute for the need for 6x9"s?
I have no clue when it comes to amps. I know that I've had good experiences with my Alpine equipment before and as such I'm putting in all-Alpine this time, though I've also been very impressed with JBL products. Is one generally higher quality than the other?

Yeah, if I remember right. It was rather expensive when I got it a few years back.
What I'm worried about is that I don't know quite the differences between component and non-component systems and how to treat them, and I don't have any clue about what I need to make the subs sound good and run well. 4/26/2006 7:07:20 PM |

component means they just come in a set with separate tweeters, mids, and woofers
no big deal if you ask me; they just come in a matched set and are supposed to work better together than if you just threw some random set of speakers into the car, I guess. there really shouldnt be any difference in installation between the two types unless you get ones you'll have to custom-mount onto the car.
How to make subs sound good? don't put the gain on the amp all the way up , use the crossover, dont ghetto rig

500w headunit = 50w headunit? 4/26/2006 9:36:15 PM |
gellpak Veteran 177 Posts user info edit post |
Headunit numbers are probably wrong... actually yeah, just checked. It's a 50w x 4 Premier DEH-P740MP.
If the components are supposed to match... what do I match to the tweeters and mids to cover the bass? Just subs, or some sort of 6x9s or more 6.5s for the back?
Should I pay a lot of attention to picking an amp, or are they more or less similar so that I should just see where the deals are when I buy? Any idea how much power I'll need to run?
Also, I should probably state the purpose of all this... I'm not trying to drive down the street thumping and rattling windows, I just want to have all the sound inside the car that I could want... no overdoing the bass. Mostly for rock but I listen to everything.

if you're planning on running separate sub to take care of the lows, I'd go with the 6.5" mids (circular designs are better than oval) and whatever tweeters you'd like.
as for the amp, for your purposes, you'd probably be fine with a 200w (max) amp setup, but of course, more is always better. I actually have an amp for sale; if you're interested, just PM me (280w RMS)
Another note: when looking at wattage stats, look at the RMS wattage more than the max. RMS wattage will be the sustained output of the amplifier/rating of speakers
For the subwoofer, use a sealed enclosure as opposed to a ported one. it'll keep the bass nice and tight (but quieter) as opposed to loud and boomy. better suited to your rock music 4/26/2006 10:56:21 PM |

if you're going with componnets ou dont 'wnan bother running them off the headunit , if u wanna do that, generic coaxial speakers will do the job fine. i'd suggest a trip over to ebay or ikesound.com where u can pick up the stuff u're looking at for ALOt cheaper than cructhfield. i would run only 4 speakers jus to keep things simple and to keep the soundstage intact.
the '05+ type r subs are BEAST. with the right box and the right power u will be pissing people off. best thing is they only cost $110 +shipping for a 12" version(ikesound). 1 -12" shoudl be plenty as far as amps go, just take tchenku's advice. 4/27/2006 1:02:00 AM |

You need to tell us a little more about your listening "tastes".
Are you a music purest? Do you know the whole concept of the soundstage or do you rather like your music "all around you"?
In regards to bass, do you really like to blast it all the time or do you prefer it 'just right'? 4/27/2006 10:03:44 AM |

the way i setup my '66 was a custom autosound headunit that looked fairly stock, but was fm/am and controlled a cd changer in the trunk. i had two amps, a 45x4 pushing kickpanel 6 1/2's in the front (panels from california mustang), and 6x9's under the rear deck. i didnt cut through the rear window trim piece just mounted them under it and it sounded fine. all the speakers were infinity kappa series. the second amp, 200x2 pushed a pair of 8" mtx 6000's behind the rear seat, in a custom made box to fit on that hump in the front of the trunk, and clear the 6x9's. both amps were mounted on the back on the sub box. you might laugh, but 8"s are the only thing that will fit there, without having to take up trunk space, and it sounded pretty damn good.
i'll try to find some old pics of the interior and my speaker setup, but this is the car it was all in 4/27/2006 10:13:33 AM |

I fit 3 10s on the hump of my Chevelle, though I think your stang probably has a smaller trunk. 4/27/2006 10:17:40 AM |

Stopdropnrol, you mentioned only running 4 speakers. Do you mean only run the front 6.5s and the packaged tweeters, or only run 4 larger speakers in all 4 corners as opposed to the separated fronts and tweeters?
I know enough to not buy from Crutchfield (thank god), but their site is very nice for planning out a setup... can bargain hunt later. Though holy shit I didn't expect ikesound to have prices THAT much cheaper...
I can't say I know the concept of a soundstage (at least beyond what the words say), but I think I prefer highs from the front, lows from the back, mids all around. I like bass, but only in proportion to the rest of the music. "Just right", I guess, or just a bit more.
I plan to follow this guy's setup to fit the two 10s: http://jr.stangnet.com/sub.htm ... though from those pics I can't tell if he has anything in his package tray or not, which could present a problem.
Amps... say a 70x4w for the speakers and ~200w for the subs? I want to make sure I have a knob up in the cabin that I can use to adjust the bass without trying to mess around with the head unit locked away in my glove compartment. 4/27/2006 1:16:19 PM |

the amp for the mids isn't necessary if youre trying to save money. the headunit will take care of them decently.
run 4 mids, 2 in the front, 2 in the rear, and mount your tweeters somewhere in the front (probably some custom work). or you can get 2 or 3way front speakers and not worry about custom tweeter mounting.
example of 3way speaker (meaning, 3 speakers/tweets): http://www.kalyx.com/store/images/POWSPX653.jpg 4/27/2006 1:25:49 PM |

Are the separated models preferable for any reason? I have the combined style now (but they're shit speakers) and I barely hear them over the 6x9s and dash speaker. 4/27/2006 1:28:11 PM |

yea when i said 4 ,the mid+tweet= 1 speaker. tcenchu is right again , i would go with a 4 channel, run the front components off the front 2 channels , the 2 rears off the headunit and birdiged the last 2 channels of the amp to a sub or two. 4/27/2006 8:22:13 PM |
