Fowler has created a situation where it will be widely known that the coach we do get will be 5th choice. The good thing for this person is that unlike Carolina's 5th choice Matt Doherty, there is no NC State version of Roy Williams waiting out there, but this person is going to be reminded of being 5th choice for a long time. 4/26/2006 10:06:07 PM |

^^ The fans haven't offered the job four times and been rejected.
Fowler is like the pro sports team that wines and dines free agents, but is just allowing himself to get used so that the free agent's original team is forced to give him more money. 4/26/2006 10:18:40 PM |

Posted by Andy Katz at espn.com on April 13th:
NC State can't swing and miss a third time, which is why multiple sources expect the Wolfpack to lock in a candidate they know will say yes. The Wolfpack have already been spurned by Texas' Rick Barnes and Memphis' John Calipari in their attempt to find a replacement for Herb Sendek (off to Arizona State).
There is a host of different ways they could turn, like toward LSU's John Brady, Miami's Frank Haith, George Mason's Jim Larranaga or even ESPN analyst Steve Lavin, but the bottom line is they can't make a mistake again.
NC State athletic director Lee Fowler already has proven to the rabid fan base that he is intent on pursuing a top candidate. He failed to nab one of them, but both were likely long shots.
Now, he'll need to go with a safe pick from this point forward. Whomever he brings in now knows he's No. 3. He has to accept that he wasn't the first or even second choice. Some coaches may not want that tag; others may not care. Certainly, coaches at a lower level -- like Winthrop's Gregg Marshall -- would jump at the chance to be in the ACC, regardless of the pecking order.

if fowler isn't in deep shit with the chancellor and the board at this point then something is seriously wrong...
he shouldn't have gone for Barnes and Calipari, he should have spent his time looking for someone worthwhile... but he cracked before the same asshole fans who caused herb to leave in the first place...
if he survives this then he must have some naked pictures of the governor or something... 4/27/2006 12:34:21 AM |

Lee Fowler is just plain incompetent.
Rick Barnes & John Calipari are one thing...
But now he can't close a deal with Steve fucking Lavin?
If Fowler cant get him to leave some shitty network job to take one of the best job openings college basketball has seen this decade then something is just wrong.
This is completely absurd and he better land a fucking competent coach next week.
What the hell is wrong with this guy... 4/27/2006 7:17:58 AM |

http://www.statefansnation.com/index.php/archives/2006/04/27/scoop-analysis-how-fowler-flubbed-beilein/
According to Statefans, Fowler tried to change the conditions of the agreement with Beilein at the last minute, causing Beilein to withdraw and make his statement yesterday afternoon.
His incompetence has reached new levels. 4/27/2006 9:40:33 AM |

Could somebody please fire Fowler 4/27/2006 11:30:35 AM |
WolfMiami All American 8766 Posts user info edit post |
Quote : | "Lee Fowler took on a tremendous risk at the beginning of this process when he chose to own complete control of the whole process. But, that is what he wanted; that is what he got. When someone with zero business acumen and no real-world corporate experience gets thrown into this kind of situation, they need to recognize that they need a team of very talented people around them to guide them through all of the complex and sophisticated issues. But, Lee Fowler wanted to be “the guy”. He is going to get his wish.
If Lee Fowler was more sophisticated, then throughout the last five years he would have realized that all of his criticisms of NC State’s fans would ultimately not serve him well when he needed to find a coach…and all of his attempts to defend Herb Sendek by de-valuing the NC State job wasn’t very strategic, either. But, Lee Fowler isn’t that sophisticated. He never has been. Why would anyone think that he could be sophisticated enough to handle the intricacies of a real-world situation like hiring a multi-million dollar employee?
The real story here is not that NC State has a bad job or that NC State fans mistreated Herb Sendek by allowing him to coach for 10 years despite assimilating the second worst record in this history of NC State Basketball, as some in the media keep trying to portray. How many of the four impressive candidates that have gotten all the way down the aisle have cared about these issues? If those issues were a problem, then the candidates would have never started conversations with State.
The processes with Barnes, Calipari, Beilein and Lavin have all broken down at the end. All broken down in the execution and negotiation stage. One man is responsible for that phase. That is the way he chose it.
John Beilein is breathing a sigh of relief this morning while NC State’s program wakes up to a very different reality that no one has mentioned yet — now that Fowler has all but insured that he won’t be NC State’s Athletics Director in the future, what coach is going to want to come to NC State when they don’t know for whom they will be working in the future? Additionally, in light of Fowler’s unethical move on Beilein, why would other coaches remotely consider talking to Lee Fowler? Who can trust the guy?
When State struggles to land the next guy, expect the media to focus on everything but the intricacies of what is really going on…just like every other day." |

Well I disagree.
Its not UCLA or UNC, but its definitely on the 2nd tier.
Our roster is loaded, the facilities are nice, we're in an elite conference, the pay is high, the exposure is high, etc
You'd have a tough time naming 5 jobs since 2000 that have opened up that are more attractive than this one. You'd have an impossible time naming 10. 4/27/2006 7:04:25 PM |
