I will never find the link, but someone did a war-game study of this exact scenario. For sheer-giggles, they concluded that the state militias of California, Texas, and New Mexico acting alone without Federal Assistance could beat back Mexican forces and occupy key strategic positions in Mexico for long enough until reinforcements arrived. I think they were theorizing Federal troops would be occupied elsewhere, war with Russia or something.

Taking Mexico would of course be trivial. The question is whether or not we could successfully occupy Mexico. I don't know enough about Mexican nationalism to know if this is a real possibility.

However, the thought of Mexico occupying the United States is so absurd that its hard to even imagine how someone would attempt that. I have argued that I do not think it would possible for the entire world united against us to occupy the United States.

American nationalism makes Al Queda look like Doctors Without Borders. There would be no mercy for the rest of the world.
