Nobody believed you anyway because the gas stations pay more than $1.99/gallon. There's no way you were going to buy thousands of gallons to match their purchase.

All of the people I know that have a gas tank on their property end up paying more for it than they would at the gas station. They're paying for the convenience of having it on the property.
