I didn't like what I got in chit chat so I'm asking here
what's the best way to do this
I have 2 weeks to adjust from going out every single night to getting up at 7AM and it's really worrying me
tips/suggestions/etc. 5/22/2006 2:53:39 PM |

It seems obvious, but: Don't go out the night before your first day of work. Get your body accustomed to getting up earlier. Get plenty of sleep.
Shouldn't take 2 weeks, but depending on your body's ability to adjust it could take a couple days. Beyond that, your biological clock will probably still be a bit out of whack for several weeks, so you will be somewhat tired until you get used to it... 5/22/2006 3:03:30 PM |

get an alarm that has two alarm settings
set the first one a good hour and a half before you actually need to be up - when it goes off just cut the fucker off
set the second one for a good half hour before you actually need it
hit the snooze a couple times
take a shower immediately to wake up 5/22/2006 3:10:33 PM |

I still go out and I'm up at 630a every day and go to bed around 1230.
It can be done. Live it up. You're young.
But you know how i roll

Do all of the following things the night before:
1. Take your shower. 2. Lay out your clothes. 3. Put the coffee, water, and filter in the coffee maker. 4. Put the alarm clock in a different room or far away from the bed. 5. Make sure your car is full of gas. 6. Put a pack of nabs, a granola bar, a bottle of advil, a $20 bill, and an emergency cigarette in your glove box. 7. Pre-set your radio dial for national public radio. 8. Profit 5/22/2006 3:29:49 PM |

Get your computer to play your alarm to wake you up
this will work wonders, because you can pick something that's impossible to wake up pissed off to
Also, you're going to be a total pussy the first week. 9-5 shit will put you in a foul mood when you realize that in the real world, you get up, go to work, get home, clean, eat, have about 1-2 hours to yourself and then you go to bed. Oh well. 5/26/2006 1:11:02 AM |

EXERCISE...
Make time for a long jog, sports, weight lifting...anything in the afternoon and workout hard.
It's kind of a way to force your body to want to rest and sleep some time before 3am, plus i hear it's healthy too. 5/26/2006 1:39:17 AM |

Words to be engraved right here folks. Real life sucks. It's the tiny glimpses of vacations and days off that you actually live for. The rest of the time is legalized slavery. Sorry to break that to you. And this is coming from a guy who's totally blessed and loves his life and couldn't ask for anything more...yikes.
But yeah, set an alarm clock AWAY FROM YOUR BED and also have your PC play a song (loudly) to wake you up as a secondary alarm. There will be days that your secondary saves your butt from being late, I promise.5/26/2006 1:41:05 AM |

Yep I have to make sure I have the cell phone, loud annoying alarm clock, and then the PC blast something loud to make 100% sure one of them makes me get up. Straight to the shower is your best bet, if it werent for that I would take a few steps and fall back into bed probably. 5/26/2006 1:52:41 PM |

I was in this exact situation a little over a month ago. I didn't do anything to prepare until the night before. Just go to bed early. Your motivation for waking up in the morning (i.e. feeding and housing yourself) should be sufficient to get your ass in the shower when the alarm goes off as long as you're doing that. 5/26/2006 4:11:09 PM |

actually the best thing to do is to try to get the fuck out of raleigh
you'll never experience a college to real world transition if you stay in raleigh, it's a black fucking hole. I'm doing my best to get what I need from NCSU and then I'm on the first bus out of this town... it'll trap you into the same lifestyle for years. 5/27/2006 12:36:02 PM |

try to keep the upping your lifestyle to a minimum, as in don't start spending a bunch of money by buying everything you've ever wanted and getting every kind of monthly service that you want. Save some, give some, spend some. Upping your lifestyle is easy but cutting back is damn hard. 5/27/2006 12:44:00 PM |

Just tell your coworkers no questions until after 10am. I am not the type of person to say "good morning" to a zillion coworkers. I am not a morning person and it is never a good morning(i tell them this)

Learn how to cook, you'll save money in the long run.
Space out weekly activities across the week. Don't wait until Sunday to do everything, such as cleaning up the bathroom, laundry, ironing, groceries, filling gas, etc.
Work out or play a club sport. 6/15/2006 7:42:11 AM |

I haven't found the transition too hard, that said I work in a great area of Charlotte so I can use my lunch break to accomplish other things (grocery shopping for things taht don't need to eb refrigerated/frozen, mall shopping for clothes, banking) - the only thing i'm not doing now that I want to do is stopping at the gym on my way home, once I get that membership sorted I'll be golden.
I hate waking up at 6am, but the $$ and the regular schedule rocks, I def. don't miss being broke as a joke, and I think I can take waking up at 6am and going to a job I love over sleeping in a bit and being broke or in a job I hate. 7/5/2006 1:26:28 PM |

You will loose at least half the people who were your "friends" in college. Some are predictable, some are not. It's sad, but you have to focus on the true friends who remain. They make life that much better. 7/5/2006 1:34:31 PM |

^ Word on that.
The "transition" hasn't been too tough for me, but I've had a lot of help from my fam getting situated. The toughest part is now bedtime is 9:30pm every worknight (gotta be up by 5:30am). It's not hard to make myself go to bed then, I'm usually beat by 9:30pm anyway.
Basically, I only "go out" & "hang out" on Friday or Saturday night. It's all good though, the money is where it's at. 7/5/2006 5:05:13 PM |

I didn't start going out until after I graduated college. In college I didn't have the money to go out, I lived on campus all four years, and most of my friends were under 21. I didn't have my first hangover until I was almost 24.
Your life doesn't end unless you want it to. The only reason I slowed down was because I moved to a place where it's too far to walk or get a taxi from the bars, and I don't really like any of the bars or clubs here anyway. That and I had to get my gall bladder removed (gg, gallstones). 7/28/2006 6:29:41 AM |

it really helps if its a job you enjoy.
if you can get up and enjoy (as much as you can enjoy a job) what you do, the daily grind and 40+ workweeks will be much more bearable.
Oh, and get plenty of sleep 7/29/2006 9:42:18 PM |
