Quote : | "Harnett Central quarterback Rodney Cox seems to be floating above much of the recruiting commotion that he is causing. Cox, a 6-foot-6, 225-pound junior, ran for 2,295 yards and passed for 1,471 during the 2005 season.
His size, speed and big-play ability have led some coaches to compare him to former Texas quarterback Vince Young, who led the Longhorns to the 2005-06 national championship.
Although he is receiving correspondence from most major college teams in the Southeast, Cox is focusing on playing AAU basketball with the Durham Disciples and working to improve academically and athletically.
Cox said he has three scholarship offers -- N.C. State, N.C. A&T and East Carolina.
The long list of schools that have shown interest includes North Carolina, Duke, Florida, Louisville, Clemson, Maryland, Miami, Boston College and West Virginia.
Cox grew up a State fan and said that loyalty might be a factor in his eventual college choice.
"I want to make the best decision for me," he said. "It would be nice if I could go to school close to home, but I'm going to go where I feel it is best for me regardless of how far away it is."
Right now, Cox is scheduled to go to only one summer football camp, at East Carolina, but he said many of the schools who are writing or calling want him to visit.
He plans to schedule more camps and visits this summer, but doesn't plan to make a decision until after his senior season.
The style of offense a college program uses will be a big factor in his decision.
He wants to go somewhere that runs a lot of shotgun formations. Harnett Central usually runs a one-back set that allows Cox, a former running back, to run.
"I'd rather run than throw," he said.
As for the Vince Young comparison, Cox said, "That is a great compliment, but I want to work hard and be better than Vince Young."
WILLIAMS TO TEXAS TECH: New Bern's Karjuan Williams, one of the fastest 800-meter high school runners of all time, announced last week that he will go to Texas Tech.
Williams chose the Red Raiders over Arkansas and Florida State because he wants to train with Texas Tech coach Wes Kittley.
Kittley is one of the nation's top 800-meter coaches. He was a three-time NAIA All-America in the 800 meters at Abilene Christian.
"It's like an animal," Williams told Randy Jones of The New Bern Sun Journal. "You wouldn't take a monkey and send it to Antarctica. You wouldn't take a penguin and send it to Africa. You take an 800 runner, you send him to 800-meter land. It's a simple as that."
Williams is from New Orleans, but moved to New Bern after Hurricane Katrina.
RAVEN TO STATE: Bill Edwards, a four-year baseball starter at Ravenscroft, has committed to N.C. State.
Edwards, a 6-1, 170 -pound shortstop, is hitting .420 for the Ravens.
"He is one of the smoothest high school infielders that I have ever seen," said Ravenscroft coach Greg Long.
ARTHUR TO KANSAS: Darrell Arthur, a 6-9 senior basketball forward, signed with Kansas last week. Arthur is ranked No. 9 by scout.com.
COACHING SEARCH: The athletics directors at Southeast Raleigh and Wakefield are moving steadily through a lengthy list of candidates for their head football coaching vacancies.
Both Southeast's Gary Powers and Wakefield's Dexter Cooley had close to 50 coaches express interest in the jobs at their schools.
Offseason workouts are gong on at the schools even though there are no head coaches in place.
"We'd like to have the right person today," Powers said. "But to get the right person sometimes takes a while."

bama. You're right. And I hope we sign Rodney Cox, but even he has said he rather hit people in college (meaning he would love to play defense).
His offer list will likely grow after/during the summer once his junior grades are known.
Pete Carroll of USC has been in contact with him, right? 5/24/2006 2:06:43 PM |

So as soon a a senior quarterback leaves they can take the group of practicing quarter backs and make the best decision based on which one is the best?
and leave the other ones to eat shit while 1 gets the glory!

yup, if they aren't good enough to start then fuck'm
although usually you'll just recruit a star qb every 2 or 3 years and recruit backup qbs in the interim...

Get a star every 3 years with a few sleepers in between and you get in the exact position we're in now. Star recruit Stone with a couple of scrubs/"sleepers" behind him. And we all know how much you guys like stone.

exactly.
Half of them won't pan out to be worth a shit anyway, and it's about winning games, not about being a nice person. if a kid is scared of competition, then he won't commit in the first place. If he's up to the challenge and understands what will happen if he's not as good as he thinks he is, then he'll go to a place with lots of other QBs and fight it out.

Harnett Central gets some love. W00t.
But nah, I don't think he's cut out to be a good quarterback. But I haven't seen a game at my high school since I graduated. 5/26/2006 9:47:31 PM |
