I've got like 6 or so running right now, and one of them was using up like 30K of memory. I've read that its possible that a svchost.exe file could be a torjan, but how do I go about finding out which ones could be torjans if possible? 5/25/2006 3:49:56 PM |

svchost.exe is a generic host process. It could be anything. It's not an indication of a virus or spy/malware. Having multiple instances of it showing up in your task manager is common if not expected. Any process that is executed from a DLL uses svchost.exe. 5/25/2006 4:41:16 PM |

svchost.exe could also be a process which is registered as a trojan. This Trojan allows attackers to access your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data. It could also be a registered security risk and should be removed immediately.

^I found that in like 5 seconds. Please shut your computer down, and go sit in the corner. You fail.

As protostar pointed out, they COULD be trojans but unless you're noticing extreme slowdowns and or bizareness, they're probably benign host processes. If you're worried, run AVG and symantec in safe mode as well as spybot search and destroy, hijack this (posting the log file to any of 20 some sites that'll check it for you), microsoft anti spyware, etc. If none of them find anything, don't worry.
As a rule though, 4-6 svhost.exe processes aren't anything to freak out about by themselves.

I never told him to reformat. Notice I said "Oh well, I need to reinstall Windows anyway." I was speaking of myself. Reading is fundamental. 5/25/2006 4:47:02 PM |

yeah, I know what you meant but the retard who posted the original question would have come back to this thread and read the first four posts and been like OH SHIT! TIME TO FORMAT!

You can have upwards of 10-15 SVCHOST processes running on a normal system.5/25/2006 5:37:06 PM |

open up services.msc and run thru the list.
you'll be able to see which services are using svchost and turn them off if you desire. 5/25/2006 5:55:06 PM |

thanks for the assumption, but i'm aware of the fact that more than one svchost will be running at the same time. I guess I should have made that more clear so retards like you don't have to make grand assumptions.
the question was HOW DO I FIND OUT IF ONE COULD BE A TROJAN. Nowhere did I say "OH MY GOD I HAVE MORE THAN ONE SVCHOST I MUST HAVE TROJANS AND MY COMPUTER WILL EXPLODE!!!!!111"
This is more what I was wanting help understanding, taken from that site Protostar linked to
Quote : | "Determining whether this process is a virus or a legitimate Windows process depends on the directory location it executes or runs from in WinTasks." |
thats what I wanted advice on. I hope the question is clear enough now.

^^ well considering the rest only use like 3-4k AT MOST it perked my interest and I checked things out, the whole "Could be a trojan" thing came up, so I thought i'd ask if anybody knew of a way to differentiate which ones could be the actual system and which could be a possible trojan.
as I said before, i guess i wasn't clear enough...enough for people like you to rather than ask a question to help you understand the situation and offer advice, you'd rather stick to the dickhead comments.
but thats ok, gg.
