yeah basically Lebanese is someone from Lebanon, but you guys should know that Lebanese people are not arabs. Lebanese today were known as Phoenicians. Phoenicians were there way before there was something called arab or a mohamad. Just because they speak arabic, it doesn't make them arabs. We speak english, does that make us english? Israel is located in the middle east, are they arabs? 6/1/2006 9:13:30 PM |

Okay, I actually thought this thread was kinda funny at first, but now that I think about it, I'm sensing some racism.
What's so important about making sure that people understand the Lebanese are not Arab?
Why are you trying to separate the Lebanese from the Arabs?
Is there something inherently wrong with Arabs that the Lebanese do not want to be tagged with?
Or is this just a PSA?
"Hey, the Lebanese aren't Arabs. The...more...you..know...ding...ding...ding!"

if I was Lebanese, I wouldn't want people to think I was an arab, either.
...
seriously, there's a huge distinction made by people in the middle east as to their ethnicity. for instance, Iranians are very proud of their Persian heritage, and are quick to point out that they aren't arab.
i think the cultures that come from older civilizations (Lebanese, Egyptians, etc.) tend to view arabs as descended from nomadic tribesmen who didn't join civilization until oil became important in the early 20th century.
but i could be wrong. maybe some native middle eastern person could elaborate. 6/2/2006 12:23:16 AM |

Then that includes the Sunni Muslims, Shia Muslims, Christians and the Druze. All these groups cannot be solely Phoenicians in origin. Arabs dominated lebanon for 1400 years, so it is kind of silly to claim that all lebanese people do not have any arab blood in them.
Quote : | "arabs ... didn't join civilization until oil became important in the early 20th century." |
Muslim Arabs created the leading civilizations of their time in the 8th century. This was the impetus that lead to the expansion of islamic domination of the world to the extent that spain was under arab rule for 800 years. If arabs did not join civilization until the 20th century then you would not have, for example, referred to Algebra as Algebra.6/2/2006 1:20:31 AM |

most muslims in Lebanon consider themselves arabs. the whole idea is to drive the christians out of there eventually leading to almost all muslims where they will have to start considering it as an arab country and where a muslim man could become eligible for presidency. 6/2/2006 1:32:24 AM |

well... that only leads me to conclude that either:
(1) none of the Lebanese are Muslim
or
(2) some Lebanese falsely consider themselves to be arab, when actually they aren't.
man, i just gotta say that Lebanon is one confusing place. no wonder they run around setting shit on fire all the time.

Syria has fucked with Lebanon for a lot of time and continues to cause a lot of shit there. Lebanese are originally phoenicians. The phoenicians founded Lebanon and started everything way before there was anything called arab or mouhamad. Yeah, if you ask the christians in Lebanon what they are, they will tell you phoenicians yet the muslims will tell you they are arabs. Don't forget that the majority of the phoenicians were christians and spoke the language of Christ, Aramaic. Slowly but surely, the damn arabs started to take that out of the Lebanese people, along with the many different invasions occuring leading to the bullshit we have today. 6/2/2006 2:39:24 AM |

Not really.
Ancient Phoenicia once existed in the area which is now Lebanon, coastal Syria, and Northern Israel. But It only existed from about 1200 BCE til around 500 BCE, when the Persian king Cyrus conquered it. By the time Alexander the Great came around ~350 BCE, Phoenica had ceased to exist as a separate region in this area.
Modern Lebanon is a virtual melting pot of ethnicities. including Arab, Maronite, Syriac, Levantine, Armenian, Assyrian, Jew, Kurd and Persian. Most recently included are a large amount of Palastinian refugees.
Ethnicity in Lebanon is based on cultural self-identification, rather than any kind of genetic heritage.
Quote : | " Don't forget that the majority of the phoenicians were christians and spoke the language of Christ, Aramaic. " |
Not true.
Phoenecians had their own language: Phoenecian. The speakers called it "Phoenican-Caananite"... It had its own alphabet: The Phoenician Alphabet. Phoenician was a Semitic language, so it was related to both Aramaic and Hebrew.
Phoenician people were a subset of the larger Caananites. There was really nothing different about them from the other Semitic people except that they were excellent shipbuilders and seafarers. They worshipped variations on the standard Caananite pantheon: Tanit, Baal, Astarte, etc.
So, not only were Phoenicians not Christian, it would be impossible for them to be christians, as Phoenicia ceased to exist before the time of christ.
What was left of the Phoenician people eventually moved to north Africa, where the Phoenician city of Carthage had become prominent as a maritime economic power. Phoenician Carthage was founded around 800 BCE, peaked around 500 BCE, and was mostly destroyed by the Romans around 150 BCE.
You might recall that Phoenician Carthage was especially famous for child sacrifices. The burnt remains of thousands of male children ages 2-6 years have been discovered in a Carthaginian cemetary. The practice was to offer the child to a statue of a Phoenican god which included a fire pit in which the child was made a burnt offering.

Let's not forget that phoenicians eventually did speak the language of Jesus Christ. Also, a phoenician city Gubla, known as Byblos gave it's name to the Bible.
